I love music and I'm very into "guys with guitars" (jmayer, jmraz, guster, ari hest, maroon5, etc) Yeah, Kathy! You're my hero! I love (I live for!) guys with guitars. I got into John Mayer way back in 2001, and have seen him in concert 9 (!) times since then. During the summer of '01, I saw him 5 times, which has turned out to be the best investment in the world for me. I got to see him in small venues, with cheap ticket prices (under $20), and got to hang out with him frequently (he even knew my name, at one point). I'm really disappointed with him lately (he seems bored, though I think it's more because he's playing the same songs than because performing doesn't thrill him anymore). The Dave Matthews Band will always be my big addiction. I've seen DMB in concert 16 times, and it's still a thrill. Though they struggled in the summer of '01 (I saw them 4 times that summer), they're back to their original form this year. I'm also a big fan of David Gray (I see him this weekend), Howie Day (10+ times in concert), Counting Crows, Jason Mraz (though I don't think he's that great live), and a host of other guys and their guitars. ;D Glad to know someone else has my GREAT ( ) taste in music!

OH CANUCK- you are the bomb, lady First of all, I am so jealous about the Jmayer thing. Oh....*sigh*! But, I totally agree about him lately- what is up with him selling out and not talking to fans anymore? And changing his whole wardrobe? It's sad that performing doesn't thrill him anymore. I heard he wasn't very good with CC on their tour. ANyway, I LOOOOOOOOOVE Howie Day. I have the Madrigals CD/DVD and it's GREAT. I <3 bunnies and sorry so sorry. *sigh* what a cutie I LOVE Jason Mraz. He's my favorite of all of them. I saw him in concert before he got "big" and just like you I got to meet him and whatnot (even though he didn't know my name ). It was very fun. I LOVE his songs and their lyrics....it's like really great poetry. I do think he's great live, but not lately b/c he seems a little confined by the commercialization of his whole life. But, hopefully he'll get over it and be great again! Also, Ari Hest is great. I have heard of David Gray, but never heard anything by him. Sondre Lerche is also great. I love finding people who love these boys as much as I do Kathy

I've been wanting to give Ari Hest a try for a long time. When I hear someone's name long enough, I know they're definitely worth a try. Is there something specific that you suggest, or does he only have one CD or what?
I found out about David Gray and John Mayer (and later Howie Day) from just hearing (and reading) from Dave Matthews Band fans over and over and over, "Give it a try!" I've been very glad that I did.
David Gray sings "Babylon," which was popular on the radio about 2 years ago. That's been basically his only big hit. Though, if you saw the movie Serendipity, the oft-repeated instrumental is his, called "January Rain."

aaaah! we are so on the same wave-length here! although ive been more into indie rock lately i still love my guitar playing boys. i got into mayer back in 2001 and my copy of room for squares is even the old black and white cover one. ive seen mayer twice and mraz twice as well... both before they got too big. i love mraz and im still waiting for him to take me up on my offer to have his childern. david grey is awesome, you should check out his older album "sell, sell, sell." "late night radio" is one of my all time favorite songs. i am a HUGE guster fan. if you guys havnt heard them go out and buy all their cds right now! ive seen them 3 times, including yesterday when i got to go to a private acoustic set and meet them. single best moment of my life. i too have been extremely dissapointed with mayer lately, i didnt even try to get tickets for his last show... i guess ive given up on him. you guys should check out josh kelly... hes the next mayer. -tellohvision

We're so cool. John Mayer is slipping up a little bit, but I still couldn't keep myself from buying tickets for his show in August. The impression that I'm getting is that he's REALLY bored with playing the same old stuff that he's been playing for four years now. I'm holding out hope that things will improve once his new album comes out in Sept. The songs that I have heard from the album have been rather spectacular. Speaking of new songs. Apparently he stopped in the middle of a new song, "Wheel," at a recent concert and told everyone to stop their screaming and clapping. So it's a song that is obviously very special to him. That gives me hope. I saw Guster 'bout a month ago. Went with my cousin, who is a HUGE fan. For her 16th birthday last year, I took her on a road trip to see Guster. Being the cool cousin that I am (and the professional stalker!), after that show was over I was like, "oh, let's walk around the back of the building, just to check." And there they were. Needless to say, she thought that I was just about the coolest person in the world. I myself met Guster in the summer of 2000. Two big flukes. I met Brian and Adam outside of Riverside Amp., where they were opening for DMB. 4 days later, I run into Ryan walking down Michigan Avenue in Chicago. ...and I wasn't even in Chicago to see him! So, yes. I definitely love Guster. I'll give ya'll the review on David Gray -- I see him on Saturday night. "Late Night Radio" is a favorite of mine, too.

I LOVE GUSTER. Ironically, I have my Guster t-shirt on today How funny. I think The Wil Seabrook Band is pretty good, too, and also Will Hoge. These are new to me. Some people say damien rice is good, too, but I'm unsure about him yet. I love Sondre Lerche. And Gavin Degraw. WE ARE SO COOL, i agree! I have to try David Gray really soon. Kathy

Girls -- have a bit of guy + guitar news to share! Have you heard John Mayer's new single, "Bigger Than My Body"? I find it shamlessly marketable, and TOO damn catchy! I love it, but I think that I'm sort of embarassed that I do. It's not the John Mayer that I started out listening to, that's for sure. You can download it here: www.msu.edu/~portwoo4/johnmbig.mp3Also: have you guys ever heard of Damien Rice? He's AMAZING. I bought his CD last Saturday and have been peeing myself over how good it is since then. Really, really loved it. Mini-review of JM/Counting Crows last weekend: blah. Mini-review of David Gray the weekend before that: amazing. I'm seeing Ari Hest and Matt Nathanson (check him out! I totally dig him!) at the end of this month. I'm pumped!

Thanks, Canuck, for that mp3. It rocks. I really like it, but again, i agree that it's not old school mayer. HE'S GONE POP! i'm afraid mraz is going to go the same way.... YAY for ARI HEST & Matt nathanson!! Still trying to get some David Gray on this end. I really like Damien Rice, too Trying to go to a Maroon5, Gavin Degraw and Marc Broussard concert at the end of October. That would be like a dream come true Next weekend it's Mraz, liz phair (BLEAH!) and Sondre Lerche for me.

I think mraz is like 175% more talented than Mayer, so, my answer is no K

It'd be impossible for me to impartially judge between Mraz and Mayer since I will always be able to claim "I was a JM fan BEFORE it was cool." JM's lyrics seem superior to me, though it's a personal preference. I don't know, I think I'll just always hold a special place in my heart for John Mayer, 'cause I knew him (and he knew me!) way back when. Forgot to mention yesterday that Howie Day's new single is out, too. Again, I like it. Again, I'm not sure if it is too commercial. I just get all nervous thinking about Howie going the way of Mayer. www.sweetsaliva.net/tbeauty/perfect_time_of_day.mp3Also: JM is going to be on the cover of Rolling Stone (gasp!) in Sept. It'll probably break my little heart. Take care, girls!
