This stuff is really good but take care with it. It takes a while to work. Ex: I picked the hell out of this under the skin...massive...thing right between my eyebrows. It was horrible...it made the biggest scar and everytime i would touch it, it would get red as anything...it was soo embarrassing. There were times when my face was clear but I had to use makeup anyways because of this scar. My mom picked me up this stuff and I tried it. At first i thought it was crap...but i used it every single night for about...a year...no joke..that long. But the scar is completely gone now...and i can touch the spot all i want and it doesnt turn red at all...i dont even have to put make up on the spot where it was anymore. Its amazing. I also find that Oxy wipes take the redness out of your face and make it really dry. The Mederma will make your skin really dry and peely for a few days until you get used to it. The peeling detered me from picking that spot because peeling the skin off every morning filled the urge. Its a really good product but highly expensive. I havent used it on my arms or legs because there are just too many scars and since i have stopped picking it would be a waste. Eventually i plan to attack that problem once I stop...which i hope will be soon....

I have used the Mederma before and I didn't really care for it. The directions tell you to apply 3 or 4 times a day...at the time, I hadn't even started picking, but I had had about 13 moles removed one summer. And I have some HORRIBLE scars from that. But Mederma runs about $30 a tube and the tubes aren't that big. It smells like fake roses and if I had followed the directions, I would've run out in a week's time.
I have also tried the scar therapy patches, but the adhesive tears up my skin even more.
I am glad the Mederma worked for you, Incubabe...that is good to know in case I decide to give it a second chance.

Incubabe-
Just got my tube of Merderma yesterday. I hope it helps....I won't get discouraged since I know I won't see immediate results. I would just like my scars to lighten by next summer. This summer was a lost cause.

If you use it consistently they will fade. My scars from cutting are lighter now and Ive been using Mederma on them for like 2 months on and off. They used to be a deep purple color and now they are just light purple like.

Mederma is a scar lightener. Its medicine that makes your scars look lighter and sometimes makes them just about vanish depending on how noticeable they are now. You can get it at a drugstore. Its OTC but its $$ expensive. Its worth it.

Hey Mederma users! Just wanted to let you know I was in the drugstore the other day, and noticed that there was a generic (Wahlgreens) brand of Mederma that was exactly the same, but about $10 cheaper. So if $$$ is an issue, maybe look for or ask for the generic? Good luck! Elsie

Does anyone know whether Mederma is safe to use when you're on acne medications? I'm using two prescription topical creams and they already dry out my skin quite a bit.

Do you guys use mederma on your face? I have been for a few days and my skin is soooo dry. It almost looks worse with the flaky skin then the spots....

For those of you who have tried Mederma, or other brands to make scars 'disappear'......did you notice if it makes your scars darker? I have been using New Skin Scar Therapy for about a week and it seems like it is making my scars really dark. Just what I don't want it to do. I know it says it will take 6-8 weeks to help. I really want to wear shorts this summer, but not if my scars look worse. Any thoughts?

Garfieldlover,
In my experience, Mederma irritates my skin and makes the scars look worse temporarily. So, if I put it on before I go to bed at night my scars will look red in the morning.
However, it has definitely lessoned their appearance over time. A day or so after I stop using mederma, they look better than they did before I started using it.
Maybe you are experiencing something similar?

When I use it, it does make them look more red until the next night when I wash off my makeup. It does take time...lots of time. However, if it is making it a lot darker I would consider not using it anymore. Sounds a little shady to me.
The Mederma will dry your skin out. For the first few weeks that you use it you will be all flaky. Yum. However, as time goes on you won't dry out even if you stop using it for a few weeks and then start again. If you are using a bunch of topical things, I wouldn't use it. You shouldn't use it on anything that is open either.
