Hi everyone. I came to this board about a year ago looking for help with the CSP I have dealt with for over ten years. I've have found a solution, and just wanted to share in case anyone else out there might benefit.
I believe that trich (hair pulling) is very similar to CSP, so I read a little about that, and I found several sources stating that an SSRI in addition to low dose of an antipsychotic was helpful. I also read an article in "Current Psychiatry" on CSP where this combination was effective.
So, I told my doctor and he prescribed Symbyax, which is prozac 25 mg and zyprexa 6 mg in one.
The zyprexa in this medication I believe has "cured" me. I have truly amazed myself. I do not pick anymore. I can be seen without makeup. I have no desire to analyze my face. No willpower is required with this.
Thankfully, I haven't had the weight gain issue others have mentioned as a zyprexa side effect. I feel the same as before the medicine, maybe my mood is a little brighter since my face is clearer. The term "antipsychotic" doesn't sound good to me, but I really don't feel "medicated." I just feel good, normal, but I don't pick.
It almost brings me to tears that it was this easy. No more wasted time in front of the mirror.

Hmmm, I'm worried about your title. I've read the hundreds of articles about med.s, Trich, and CSP and it is my understanding that while some med.s work for some people, no med.s work for everyone. But, that is not why I am (ever so cautiously) writing in reply to the statement, "I'm cured." From what I have read, med.s can help you start treatment, but their strong, positive impact is sited as temporary in the the literature w/ regards to controling the urge. They are usually used in conjunction with Behavior Modifcation (or some other type of therapy) when long term positive results are sited. I have yet to read about longitudinal or mass trials of any med. that has worked alone. It sounds as though you are in a really good place to try a complimentary therapy.
Keep your attitude positive, focus on your life and remember that it is the journey, not the destination that is important.
You are more than this one behavior!

Thank you for that tip. I appreciate you sharing your triumph with the rest of us. I'll be meeting with my psychiatrist soon, and I would like to go into his office armed with info to get his input. Thanks again, and glad to hear you're doing well.
