I have picking scabs on my scalp for years now. I didn't start til about 5 years ago. Why then, I don't know. I find it gratifying, almost like a security blanket. I also found out that acrylic nails make it so I can't pick but I can't afford to get them done anymore so I still pick. My scalp also hurts when I wash it. It's become such an obsession. I can't stop. I would give anything to stop. I've tried wearing hats or gloves. I'm telling you though, once those things come off I keep picking. It's so gross. I too squirt neosporin on them as well as scalpacin but it doesn't itch so until I decide to stop or figure out how to break the habit I will just be a "picker". Anyone have any other suggestions?

I'm going to try to stop. I pick my scalp too. I also pick my nose and face, and less frequently my arms, legs, chest shoulders and back. And it all goes right in my mouth.
It's hard to get a perspective on how disgusting other people see it is, because I've been doing it all my life it's all I know. I've become extremely skillful at hiding it, and can go for hours if need be if I'm being watched. But seconds after being alone I "catch up". So, there is some control there, obviously, if I can just tap into it. I've tried to stop 1000s of times, literally, and have never made it one single day. When I look at other people and their wierd (to me) addictions, I think if I were them I could just stop and that would be that. But these are coping mechanisms and I think the stress and the relief is too powerful to break. I don't know if this helps anyone. I'm going to write in a journal every time I do it, to make it harder and make me aware. No money no therapist just a journal. We'll see how it goes. I've never tries this before...

I haven't done anything since last night. I decided not to scratch itches and basically not to touch myself at all unless it was necessary and appropriate (like when taking a shower). I can't remember when I've gone this long without doing anything. It's been 9 hours. Like in AA, I'm just going to have to take this 1 minute at a time. What I've targeted isn't a particular behavior but just broadly "touching myself unneccessarily and inappropriately". and more broadly "using coping mechanisms instead of dealing with reality". I'll keep posting with any positive developments.

It's been 24 hours. I stuck my finger in my nose one time but caught myself before I dug. I have not picked my scalp or anything else.
My skin itched all day and night. It's like withdrawel. My nose is bugging the crap out of me. It just feels wrong, but it's an illusion. I think a lot of the itching is also hyper-sentitized and maybe bogus. I asked God to do it for me b/c I can't do this; I'm powerless over this.

4.5 days now, no relapse yet. The intense itching all the time has started to go away. I decided to shower / wash my hair half as much (when appropriate) to deal with dry scalp and face. Sometimes when I'm stressed I give my scalp a good rub or general scratch but, and I still say, I don't want to do that either, but it has not turned into picking. Also, that full feeling in my nose is slowly going away. I'm not sure where the boogers are going, and I don't care. All I know is they aren't going onto my finger and into my mouth. Cold turkey is the only way.

10 days now and I have not actually picked my scalp or nose one time. This is very amazing, especially my nose, since I would do it without thinking and it would be done before the thought police even had a chance to get on the scene.
I have scratched and rubbed but have not actually picked. My rule is, if I do, I have to post it on here. Let's see if I can make it 21 days, since that's how long they say it takes to break a habit.

I don't really have a problem picking my scalp, but I do have a problem pounding my pud. And like scalp picking, pud pounding can become very embarrassing, too. Like the time I was sitting in the classroom by myself. Nobody was around so pulled my pud out and started pounding it. Well, just about the time I started really getting into it, Mrs Jenkins, my Biology teacher, walked into the room. Man, talk about embarrassing! That was my most embarrassing moment at school ever. Well, that's back when I was going to school. Mrs Jenkins marched me down to the Principal's office, and he kicked me out of school. So, all I can say is that if you have a problem scalp picking or pud pounding, don't get caught doing it in school. Those people have no sympathy at all!!

I'm going to try again. It all just reverts if I don't police it. when it becomes sub-concious is when it really gets out of control. very frustrating. I think to quit behavior B I have to target behavior A, where A leads to B. So, back to no touching or scratching.

On a whim I searched something similar to "scalp picking" and found this. I never knew there was a board for this kind of thing, and I feel kind of relieved that I'm not the only one who does this. I remember I was always fascinated with picking scabs from skin, always asking my family if I could pick their scabs. They didn't really object to it so it kind of came natural to me when I started picking my scalp. Although I think the real reason why I started picking is when I had lice just before grade 2, and I successfully picked out a mother lice. (Sounds gross right?) A couple years later, I would find my mom picking her dandruff out so I kind of started mimicking her. I do not have bad dandruff, I just kind of find it settling on my hair. (Not on my scalp) Eventually, I somehow got a scab on my scalp and started to continuously pick at it. Over time it got harder and harder to pick at so I left it alone for a while. It started healing and stuff but before it could completely go away, I started picking at it again. Same thing happened again but this time I left it alone for good, and just continued picking my dandruff. (and also the scabs on my limbs.) This 'cycle' I like to call it kept going on for years (like.. 6-9 years maybe? I'm 15 right now) and I currently have two scabs. One hurts like a munching-fudge when I pick at it and the other is like.. heaven to pick. Just an odd note, I like to chew my lip and the skin around my nails and eat the skin. (Still being gross here..) On another odd note, my dandruff isn't flaky but more like.. crumbs. Small, tiny crumbs or a small, small piece of paper rolled into ball. I don't know why I wrote that but hope you guys find it fascinating? Haha. Okay, last odd note... Recently to start picking out the thick hairs (my hair is relatively thin) on my scalp because they feel funny when I run a strand between my fingers. (Probably from dying my hair.) Uh, thanks for reading this post, strangers on the internet.

It's been long enough for me to report conclusively.... I am 100% done picking my scalp! I don't do it conciously or unconciously.
I have gone back to picking my nose, but I don't eat them any more. I wipe them on a kleenex.
So, not perfection yet, but progress at least.

I've been picking at my scalp, back, legs, chest, and face for the past...2 years or so? It's gotten pretty bad. I like to pick at any little scabs I find and will scratch and pick at the base of my bangs. I don't get too many pimples on my face, and when I do they're usually around my hairline and occasionally on my chin - not super noticable really. What I've been having issues with is my back. Lately, if I start picking at it at all - which I inevitably do by the end of the day - it starts itching like crazy, and it won't stop! It's been keeping me up at night, what with the itching and burning just leading to more scratching. The other night, I found myself - I dunno - sleep scratching. Basically I suddenly became aware of what I had been doing (Even though I was aware of it in a sort of dream-like way), looked at the clock, and noticed that 3 hours had passed. Kinda freaked me out. And sleep-scratching makes for sucky sleep -_-

Wow, I thought I was the only person who picks my scalp. It's nice to know... I thought I was a freak... I'm 15 and I started picking about a year ago... Stress caused it... Freshman year was full of stress... So was my life at home... But can anyone suggest ways to stop? I want to and half the time I don't realize I'm doing it until I bleed. I find it disgusting, but I just can't stop... Tips would be appreciated
