Hopefully this is appropriate in this forum... After a bit of reading, I have found that skin picking and BDD (Body Dismorphic Disorder) have a high rate of comorbidity. I was curious to hear feedback from any of you on the forum who may have BDD and skin picking who have tried Zoloft- what were the results? Thanks

Hi...I didn't find zoloft particularly useful for picking, and it's hard to go off of once you're on it! (You've got to REALLY taper off slowly, 'cause the withdrawal can be harsh.)
I have a friend who said buspar really helped her with her picking, although I don't have personal experience with this.
For me, what has helped has been behavioral change over time, trying to incorporate any "tips for quitting" that come my way into my own patterns, as well as having my boyfriend "guard" me in the bathroom at night when I wash my face, which is definitely my most vulnerable time.

thanks! also, it seems that the general consensus around here is that zoloft is not effective as far as the picking goes- does it somewhat alleviate the compulsive behavior to some extent? And does anyone have experience with any kind of SSRI and BDD, I'm really curious to hear the results?

All I know about Zoloft is what I have experienced.
I'm still taking it, but I want to stop because I hate it. Here are some reasons why:
1. When you first start taking it, there are side effects such as neusea and dizziness, also I feel tired all the time while on Zoloft.
2. If I forget to take it, or purposely stop suddenly (like if I'm going to a party, and don't wanna mix meds with alcohol or other drugs), the withdrawals can be really bad. Sorta like having PMT 24/7. Sometimes I become violent or aggressive, which is very out of character for me.
3. Zoloft completely KILLS your sex drive. My cousin is on Zoloft and she is having marriage trouble because she is lacking the sexual feelings for her husband she once had; my friend's mum, Nina, told me that she used to take Zoloft, but stopped because it ruined her sex drive; and Nina also (seriously) asked me if I ever masturbate - and the honest answer is no, because I just have absolutely no sexual desires.
Zoloft DOES help my obsessive thoughts, and anxiety, but it hasn't done anything for my behaviour, and has actually caused more problems in my life. For example: while I've been on Zoloft I thought I was a lesbian because I had no desires towards men - now I know its just the medication messing with my head.
I'm gonna make an appointment with my Doctor soon, so hopefully I'll be able to change my meds.

Laura, I'm having the same problem with Lexapro....absolutely ZERO libido. I guess it's a common side effect with these types of drugs and a huge reason why most people (especially men) stop taking them. I stopped taking it it for a little over a month and I was a mess--right back to all my OCD behaviors, not just picking, and I couldn't concentrate on squatola.
I guess it's a trade off and the husband has been VERY understanding and supportive, as he is dealing with his own issues as well. It is a pisser though, I agree!

Thanks Laura and FarmGirl- hmmm.... the side effects really sound bad- would you say they outweigh any of the positive aspects of Zoloft, and- when you first begin... is the nausea, diziness etc. really bad and how long before they get better? (sorry for all the questions )

Hi Ancee! The side effects are different for everyone and they may not even occur. It is such a hit or miss. For a while me and my husband were on the same medicine called Effexor. It did absolutely nothing for him but gave me such bad dry mouth! I think all in all we've tried about 4 different medications each. For me the side effects (right now it's only decreased libido) are nothing compared to what I gain from my particular medicine. Today I almost felt the urge to exercise Maybe tomorrow or the next day I'll actually follow through. That's what I like about it--it's almost like it motivates me somehow to want to feel better. Weird huh? Never know till you try

So true! Ok, well I think I will start tomorrow.... I've been staring at the bottle sitting on my desk for the past few days- for some reason, I just haven't been able to start taking it... its like I'm scared of the medication- thats ridiculous. I have 25mg to start off with- I keep wondering if my doctor has prescribed me too much, too little, if its the right thing, what its going to do to me.... blah blah blah. I need to stop analyzing and start taking this damn stuff. Thanks for the motivation FarmGirl, hopefully this works and I will have a positive update for you

Definately keep us posted Ancee I think that with most of these drugs they need to be in your system for a bit before you'll start noticing a change. For me, I don't start feeling anything until about a week to 10 days, so just don't get discouraged if you don't notice things right away Best wishes!
