I thought this had now become and OCD characteristic. I sometimes really don't know what I'm specifically doing, and it's true what the say about the "trance state". I want to stop, and have done so before ... but I really hate my new job, as it's very boring ... times where I don't use my brain and I've noticed the picking become just gross. Not to bleeding mind, although sometimes my fingers get over sensitive ... but it is still a gross habit to have. I've noticed more and more that I do when in front of the computer or the TV. I don't do it at the cinema ... so what gives? Oh, I also do it when I'm a passenger in a car. I don't even realize it, until I look down and see little crumbs of skin ... gross and embarrassing.
I've also become obsessed with ingrown hairs. That is really when I realize my trance mode. When I first get up in the morning, I look at my face for any ingrown hairs. I grab the tweezers and say to myself I'm only going to limit my self to a couple of minutes ... but then literally a half hour passes. What's wrong with me? I'm starting to get freaked out by it.
I'm a healthy 35 yr old who has a pretty good diet, and I work out almost every day, at least once a day. The only thing I guess that isn't healthy is my sleeping habits. I'm only average about 5hrs a night during the week, sometimes only 4 hrs. There is just too much to do and not enough hours in a day. Could that be related to it?
So glad I found this site.

Really try to get some rest and down time. My worst picking time is when I am tired. Dee
