I've seen a lot of advice for stopping the picking at your face or arms or legs, but my picking problem is mostly centralized to my fingers. So no matter where I go, I am able to do it. No mirror tricks or dim lighting will help. Also, I don't need tools. I do better with, but I am quite happy picking away at the skin near my nails while at school or out shopping. Fake nails won't do it for me either, because then I resort to biting the skin around my nails. Has anyone had any luck with this problem?

hi, i am a skin picker, not only that, i pick at my hands. i tried stopping by myself, free will. my parents used to yell at me and i think that may have made it worse. I used to pick at my fingers almost sub consciously. I then went to my doctor and i was on selecsa (?) for a while, it seemed to be working then i didnt so i stopped taking it, now recently after the urges getting overwhelming i went back and i started on prozaac, and i can tell you that it is not only me who has noticed a difference. My parents did. I still pick time to time, but the urge is dramatically reduced. also my doctor suggested therapy, but she said that usually medicine has a much better response. I hope that helps, let me know how it goes.

Try carrying a worry stone or wear worry beads on both hands. Just rub those instead of picking. The only problem I have with the worry stone is that I forget to take it with me. It's kinda big. Not like a boulder or anything, just a handful.

Ooh, there's another tactic.
My sister has serious anger issues and what really helps her is to release the emotion as soon as she feels it.
She does it by making this weird gargle/growl sound. Yeah, it makes you look weird but when it makes you aware of what you're doing after a while. Plus it makes you laugh and then the stress disappears.
