I'm 20 and I think I've been terrible to my skin since high school. All my life I've gone by the expression that no one can help you but yourself. My mom dismissed doctors and medicines and said that the problem and the solution are within the person. Unfortunately though, it seems that my mom has also passed some neurotic tendencies to my sister and myself. There's always tension and needless stress. My sister developed eating disorders and I've been picking at my skin, biting my nails and obsessing over my eyebrows, eyelashes, and hairline. I've had moderate acne that by now would be gone if I didn't pick at my skin but lately my stress has been escalating, without cause really. I exagerrate situations and worry for everyone and about what people think of me. I'm aware of everything but still do it. Right now I'm resorting to keeping a journal. Here are some of my tips:
1. wear lotion and then moisturizing gloves. It keeps your cuticles in good condition and keeps you from picking.
2. keep the bathroom door open and light candles
3. tell your family so that you feel embarassed when you do it. I'm so embarassed when my fiance sees me walk around with cream on my face for five days after I slip up.
4. go to a dermatologist no matter how bad you mess up. I stopped picking as much because my anxiety became stronger when I thought of what the dermatologist would say to me.
5. a worry stone-but it doesn't work for me since I lose it or forget that I even have it
On another note, light chemical peels do work! Only after two sessions, I picked at my skin and its been progressively worse so I messed up the results.
Take care! All of you have the strength to overcome this and each and every one of you deserve to have clear, beautiful skin. You're all great on the inside, all have such potential! Let it show on your skin. Focus all your anxieties on making your skin as beautiful as possible. Obsess with skin care rituals instead of ruining your skin! Hugs for you all! I feel your pain.
