In spite of going through a very stressful time in my life, I have had some success this week with not picking because of one simple thing that other people have often suggested: Hiding the mirrors. My bathroom light went out, and knowing what kind of week I was having I decided just to leave it out, brushing my teeth and washing my face at night by nightlight. It's enough to keep me from picking like I used to. Nighttime was always when I would pick. The soft light is also very flattering, I can actually feel lovely looking at myself in it. It also makes it easier to not fixate on the 5 or 10 lbs I have gained recently when I get out of the shower and see myself in the mirror (I usually shower at night).
There is only one other mirror in my apartment, in the bedroom, and I've draped a scarf over it. I use a hand mirror to apply concealer in the morning by the window where there's more light and that's it. It's impossible to pick one-handed, and seeing only part of my face at a time makes it much easier to not fixate on red spots. It also helps that each day my skin has been looking much better.
Topically, I have been using the Avalon Organics Vitamin C line and I definitely think the redness has been going down more because of it. I use the wash, toner and serum. The lotion with SPF made my skin sting (most suncreens do, no surprise here) and I haven't yet tried the heavier moisturizer. I also use retina micro about every other night, in an effort to get rid of the clogged pores. I know that when there is less to pick I am a lot less tempted to attack when I get stressed. I don't use it every night because the peeling and irritation are too much.
I just wanted to share what has been working for me. Happy Halloween all.
