Hey all. I am on a break between classes at school, and it's a time when I usually pick. But I thought I'd come to the computer lab and do some research! I've been looking through all the threads and it's so relieving to know people have the same problem.
i started picking when I was a junior in high school (six years ago!) and it's gotten worse ever since. I don't really have bad acne, but I pick at my pores relentlessly. My face has gotten a lot better, thanks to a fantastic esthetician. BTW, someone said something about chemical peels. they work GREAT. it really takes away a lot of the redness and scar tissue. But, you can't have any open sores when you get one, so it's a goal for pickers.
right now my problem area is my chest and my arms. My scars were healed for a while, and I was actually sun bathing and wearing low cut tops. Now I'm back to sweaters. My left arm barely has any scars, but my right arm is horrendous. I run my fingers over my skin looking for bumps, and they get dime-sized and nasty. Picking is the first thing I do when I wake up, and the last thing I do at night. I know I pick as a way to release tension and nervous energy. Right now I have five open scars on my right arm, and four on my chest.
When I was finally introduced to the world of dermotillomania and compulsive skin picking, I began seeing a great behavioral therapist. I just stopped seeing him (it was too expensive) but for six months during my sessions we figured out the root and causes of my picking.
I'm trying to stop! i have a supportive boyfriend who leaves me notes sometimes on his way to work saying things like "don't pick if you can help it. you're beautiful." it really helps. also, I have begun to use cocoa butter on my healing scars, and it helps a lot. There's also this cream my esthetician gave me called Blemish Balm, by some German company. It helps to heal my scars and take the discoloration away. Also, I can breathe easier at school and work because at least I can attempt to camoflauge my scars with something healthy (meaning not lots of makeup!)
I am graduating college next month, and I spent a lot of money on a strapless cute dress to wear for my party. I call it my "goal dress". My scars will be closed up by then. I'm sick of wearing long sleeves and high necks all the time! anyway. thanks for listening. I have support out there. *sigh*.
