Hi Could everyone please try the following and let me know how you go experimenting with your diet to stop the urge to pick.
I cut out all caffeine, cola, nuts & chocolate. I'm now finding I've got sensitive to foods with a lot of artificial colours and flavours. These foods are so tempting and everywhere to abstainance is really hard. I've had my problem 7 years (I'm now 33).
Basically if you stick to a good natural diet you should notice a change in a few days if it is going to work.
If I lapse and eat the wrong thing the picking starts within half a day.
I'd love to see if anyone else can have a good result!

Hi Annie: for me, picking is not an actual reaction to those foods, but rather something else I do along with eating junk, when I'm in some heightened state of emotion, or bored. Does that make sense? If I'm feeling balanced and relaxed, I can eat as much as I want of anything, and not pick at all. It's when I'm in a mood, or anxious, or bored that I pick AND eat those foods--two ways to deal with my emotions that I happen to do simultaneously, but one is not the cause of the other. That's just my personal experience and observations. Good luck with your survey! Elsie

I've discovered that alcohol is a big downfall for me. I'm talking one glass of wine with dinner -- not huge amounts, I'm not much of a drinker. But that one glass just kills any self-control I have.
Also a problem, weirdly enough, is cold medicine. Seems to do the same thing, inhibit my self-control.

I have given up caffeine and sugar and have much improved my situation from this alone. I also urge you to try it. As well, we should look at what we can add to our diet. I have tried to stabilize my blood sugar levels by eating healthy snacks (cottage cheese and vegetables or apple) throughout the day. Turkey sandwich and milk. There are many calming foods: Yogurt, tuna, bananas, (non sugary) oatmeal work for me. This has been a big step for me because I used to go many hours in the day without eating and then have a major pick session because my body was out of whack. I never used to eat breakfast either and that was a major problem. Plus, caffeine and sugar dehydrate the skin and make it look rough. I used to have really dry skin, it cracked and flaked all the time. Not any more. Diet counts big time.

Weird....I found myself doing a lot of blind picking last night in bed while watching tv or something 'cause I wanted a piece of chocolate so bad and was being indecisive about it. That was more of an oral fixation thing than diet thing though. I should've just eaten the chocolate earlier though, but I'm trying to lose weight so I was debating it. Cravings are such a bitch I don't know if I pick more with caffeine either, 'cause I only drink a lot of it when I'm too busy to pick. I've been abstaining from all cold medications for years so I can't say for those either but they truly make me irritable. I think the diet connection for me is (because my diet was so bad for many years) that when I am in control of my diet I am also more in control of my picking--I'm just more in control of myself. I need to eat something nutritious about every 3 hours to accomplish this or I'll binge out.

This subject is very very interesting. I'm a chocolate addict but that's not the reason why I pick, and it doesn't even make me breakout. Here in Argentina is very usual to drink during the day an infusion called "mate" which has tons of caffeine, and I'm addicted to it but it really makes you anxious.Maybe I should try cutting that out? I just don't know. My family is a family of alcoholics,my father is still, and I have to be really careful because I have problems with that also.

Hi there, in reply to your message i have tried cutting out all those things you said and more as there are lots of things i cannot eat as i have irritable bowel syndrome and get bad migraines so cannot have tea, coffee, cheese or chocolate on top of cutting out everything high in sugar or containing wheat. I find that alcohol especially Baileys (my favourite),sweets, cream, citrus fruits, fruit juices and even squash make my skin bad too but i know what you mean about temptation as i know there is only so much water i can drink before i feel sick and give in as there isnt anything else to drink.Cutting these out my diet does make my skin look better but when there is so little you can eat sometimes temptation is too much to eat/drink the things that just affect your skin and nothing else which does make me stressed cos i know what is going to happen to my skin so i do pick more rather than if i'd stayed away from them. It's hard isn't it to get the balance right!!!! I try to think what is going to happen when i eat/drink these things but once i've tasted it or smelt it it's no use temptation gets the better of me. Sorry i'm not very positive but i do sympathise with you greatly! Hi Could everyone please try the following and let me know how you go experimenting with your diet to stop the urge to pick. Nuts just seem to make me want to frantically pick within hours of eating but don't know why. I'd always thought of them as a safe treat until I started monitoring my triggers.
