has anyone had any success with celexa? my dermatologist prescribed it to me about a month ago, at a really low dose of 10mg, and at first i thought, "why not give it a try?"... but i've jsut been too scared to actually start taking it, mainly after reading about side effects and whatnot. also, i'm kind of anti-medicine, and more into holistic healing approaches, in general. but even after 3 years of doing regular yoga, which seems to be great in terms of regulating basic stress, and seeing no effect at all on my picking habit, i'm almost ready to try anything, even 'serious meds' like celexa.
if anyone has any experience with this drug, i'd really really appreciate any feedback you can give me. i'm desperate but scared s***less to start putting these chemicals in my body that might react in weird ways!

Celexa is an antidepressant and really should only be prescribed by a psychopharmacoligist. You may want to ask your doctor why he thought it would work. He may think it will make you happier or less stressed. And since that is why he/she assumes you pick, that's what he thought would work. There's any harm in giving it a try but there are side-effects to consider. My advice would be to look it up in either "The Pill Book" or on-line and read up. If you have any apprehension talk to your doctor. If you can't, it may be time to get a new doctor.

I have been taking celexa for about three months now. My doctor prescribed it for me for my stress and because I have other obsessions/compulsions along with CSP (I did not mention the CSP to my doctor). I have noticed that my picking has subsided but never connected the celexa with that until now. I also do not feel as depressed or stressed, although it makes me more tired!! It is entirely up to you, I personally am not opposed to medication and I have not had any side effects (except sometimes sexual) from the celexa. Good luck.

Hi again. I finally got an appt with a psychiatrist who knows quite a bit about CSP and she agreed that Celexa was as good a place to start (in terms of meds) as any other. I'm only on a 10mg dose, and have only been taking it for a few days, but so far so good! The only noticeable side effects are feeling more thirsty than usual (even though I normally drink tons of water anyway), a bit of tightness in my jaw, and sweaty feet. Which are all things I can deal with if this is going to help decrease the urge to pick! I think it's too early to say how that's going, since apparently it can take up to a month for the drug to 'kick in,' so to speak.
But I'm optimistic. To be honest, ever since a month ago when I finally found out that my problem had a name and there are all these other people out there, and started learning about it, I've already felt DIFFERENT when I stand in front of the mirror. I mean, before I even started the Celexa. As if I'm more conscious of my behavior, and at the same not as judgmental of myself (in the sense that realizing it's NOT just a matter of will power has put a different spin on things).
Anyway, that's my update! I haven't been back to this site in a couple weeks, but it's good to touch base with everyone, 'virtually,' again.

Mozjen-
I hope that the celexa works for you....if not there are always other medications you can try that might work better for you. I actually started taking celexa for other reasons but it really has helped with the picking also. I had a bad weekend, picked at mosquito bites, but overall I have been much better for the last month. Don't get discouraged when you don't see immediate results, also you can always ask you Doctor to up your dose. I am on 40 mg a day, I started out on 20. Good luck, keep us posted on your progress!
