I have discovered that hydrocare bandages, made by bandaide brand, help stop me from picking at my arms. You can find them at Rite Aide, Walmart, Safeway etc. Although they are somewhat expensive, ($3.69 for 6) you can keep them on for several days. If you check in a pharmacy you can find bigger patches that are similar called "duoderm". Again fairly expensive but if the area is totally covered you can't pick at it.
There is also a more expensive brand at the drug store that I tried that is supposed to reduce the appearance of scars but I found that they fall off too easily and you are only supposed to keep them on for 24 hours at a time. I had to use a ton of them to cover my arms so they were not cost effective.
The cotton glove idea is helpful as well.
I am a psychiatric nurse and didn't realize that I am not the only one who picks at my skin until I started doing some research. I have patients who cut on themselves but never thought of my habit as something similar.
I have picked at my face since adolescence but I started picking my arms after my first child was born (10 years ago) which makes me wonder if it is a hormonally based problem. I was under a lot of stress at that time and wonder if the hormones coupled with the stress is what started my problem. Does anyone know what percentage of people who pick are men?
I sure do appreciate all of the ideas that have been posted. I hope someday to have pretty arms again!
