I just ecently found this website and I think it's great! I had no idea that there were so many other people with my problem. After reading a lot of things on this site, I wanted to know if anyone could help me. I really want to get treatment for this problem but I don't know if I should see a dermatologist or a therapist, or both. If I need to see both, which one do I see first? I guess I'm afraid that whoever I see won't know anything about this problem. Can anyone help me?

I can only go by my personal expierence.. if you have a skin condition which makes you pick like ance or what not then absolutely go and see a dermatologist for your problems; however, if you wish to get rid of your scarring and such a dermatologist is not the person you wish to see nor do they have any understanding of this disorder. I was told to go and see a skin laser correction place... they really can do anything for scarring but blaesching creame which you can buy at the drug store ( Mederma) Many doctors get angry. Not to frighten you, but it does happen. There is this book every one seems to have on here call the Habit Change Workbook that seems to work wonders. I havent got it myself yet... I'm going to though. From all the research ive done it seems that this is mainly a bad habit and you have to train yourself from doing it. IF you feel that you need a therapist to figure out how to stop then i would absoltuely go that route. The decision all depends on what you feel you can handle. Personally, I find this site and input from fellow sufferers more therputic than an advice someone who doesnt suffer from the disorder can give me.

hi pickle... first of all, realize that you've already made a MAJOR step forward by identifying and figuring out what you're dealing with! and you've already discovered this site and maybe some of the other great resources online. i dealt with my skin picking for 15 years or so before finally last month identifying my problem not as just 'acne' but as this OCD called CSP! about the dermatologist vs. therapist issue, i would agree that if you do have an acne problem on top of (or, as a part of) the picking problem, you definitely want to see a dermatologist to see if they can help with the acne, b/c we all know that the more 'targets' such as pimples and whatnot you have on your face, the more you probably have the urge to 'work on them.' in my own experience, though, dermatologists REALLY have no clue, for the most part, about CSP. like i said, i've been struggling with CSP for 15 years, and over those years probably saw 8 different dermatologists, and none of them EVER mentioned the word OCD or told me my problem was anything other than a matter of will power or suggested that there is therapy/treatment available! i would try to find a therapist and/or a psychiatrist who know something about OCD. the therapist is for the 'talk' part of the therapy and the psych is for meds, if you want to go that route. a good way to find doctors in your area who specialize in OCD is to go to the OC foundation website (www.ocfoundation.org), and there's a link there where you can ask them to send you a list of doctors in your area (sorry, i can't remember now exactly what the link looks like on the site, or what it's called, but let me know if you have trouble finding it). another recommendation, if you're just starting to learn about all this, is a GREAT, GREAT BOOK by Dr.Frederick Penzel, called Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders: A Complete Guide to Getting Well and Staying Well, which came out in 2000 and is available on amazon.com and i'm sure everywhere else. good luck!!!!

i agree with mozjen. it's probably a question of needing help from both a dermatologist and a therapist. it may not matter which you see first. the trick is to do your research and find doctors who can deal with OCD and CSP. another trick is to make your treatment work for you. so ask lots of questions, be honest, don't be satisfied with what they say if it doesn't seem to fit your situation, research your options, let them know if treatment isn't working, etc. at the same time, only work with people you can trust. don't stick with a doctor you don't like!
good luck!

well i have take both so i will tell u form my own experience... i think i still dont find the right therapist for me but my advice is to go to the therapist first becuase okey u go to the dermatoligst he o she gave u treatmenats and treatmens... (like on my case) and u do for a while or somethimes yes or not.... and then u still pick urself so all u health going down but welll it was my case maybe u have more control of urself tha ti did.... i perosnally recomemd u to find a good therapist that is the right for u (cause are so many good on street but not all are good for u!!) so take the treatment... and well try to helth mentalhy and take medicines for the brian as prozac and this vitamine inosol... isotol... really dont remeber the name.. and well is u make a huge effort and u get better and u are sure u cna get with the treatement then u cna go to the dermatologist co really put the strawberry to the ice cream and well be sure u can follow good and exact the treatment... but first as i read is a chemenicla biologic prob we have to attack the prob since that ... and then try the exterior part and scars ;D i hope u understand me! beistos teresa
