I was a member of this group some time ago with the message that I
had discovered a mental exercise that was effective in eliminating
unwanted, annoying, and sometimes destructive compulsions. I asked
the members to access a web site that I had created that explained
the procedure. In my web site I revealed that I had been a
compulsive picker for over thirty years and that the compulsion had
stopped abruptly when I began the mental exercise that I had created
for an entirely different purpose. I explained the mental exercise
procedure and asked the participants to e-mail me with their
results. Several of you did and the results were as I had hoped.
For those who followed the instructions, a complete cessation of
their compulsion followed.
I also solicited participants from another web site, Pickaderms, and
once again, most of those who followed the procedure were successful
in either stopping their compulsion or reducing it to the point that
it was no longer an issue.
But there were many who were reluctant to access an unknown web site
for fear of viruses and possible invasion of privacy. And so I have
decided to post the procedure to this group. I hope that those of
you who really want to eliminate these compulsions of picking, nail
biting, etc. will try the procedure. And if you do so, please
provide feed back to the group and to me personally if you would. My
e-mail address is kenn100@yahoo.com. I can give you more
information about the success of others who have participated in the
exercise.
A word about the procedure itself. It requires twenty minutes a day
for a week. After a day or two of following the procedure there is
usually resistance to continue. Do not yield to this resistance.
Keep it up.
OK – Here it is:
Choose a sentence (hereafter called your mantra) to be
voiced over and over aloud without stopping. I recommend
"I know what I'm doing."
Choose some non-demanding reading material. Children's
stories are good or popular magazine articles.
As you are reading the story or article, voice
your mantra aloud. Understand what you are doing here. You
are voicing your mantra aloud and at the same time
reading your story or article. Essentially you are
blocking the normal pathways to cognizance and
creating new ones. The result is that the annoying
compulsion is either drastically reduced or eliminated
all together.
Keep this up for twenty minutes a day
for one week. The first day is the the greatest challenge.
You will see words that you know but they do not seem to
register their meaning in your mind. This is because you
are blocking the accustomed pathways to understanding by
voicing the mantra. There will be the temptation to stop
the mantra in order for the words to register their
meaning. DO NOT YIELD TO THIS TEMPTATION. Read the phrase
or sentence over and over until the meaning does register.
I promise you it will and when it does you will have
established new or broadened pathways to understanding.
The exercise is not intended to strengthen your
resolve to stop the picking. You have tried many methods
before that did not work or only worked for brief periods.
The purpose is to eliminate the compulsion, as though it
never existed. It is possible.
I do like to know who is doing the procedure, so if you will,
I would appreciate it if you would e-mail me of your
intention to begin and keep me informed of your daily
efforts. I do want to know how you feel and whether or not
It is working for you. There are other things that we
can talk about.
Good luck - Ken
