my 5 year old has started picking her arms and legs until they bleed and become infected...she does better if we keep them covered with bandaids and she seems to do it when she is bored. any suggestions on what to do? i dont want her to end up like me..and i also blame myself for her starting to pick

Hi,
You should never do it while your kid is near. Kids try to act as adults becaus they think adults know best. Allso you should visit a dokter or a psychiatrist. Not only to get rid of that problem, but allso becaus the picking is a sign something is wrong.
I hope the best for you and your kid. Good luck!
sorry for my poor English. I don't speak it.

Please don't be hard on yourself. I really think a major part of this is hereditary. Each member of my family has some sort of unhealthy habit that's similar to my skin picking. I didn't necessarily learn it from watching them nor from them watching me. We all just came out this way.
I'm just glad that your daughter has someone near who recognized the issue and is doing something about it. She's very lucky!

Hi -- I know this was posted a long time ago, but was wondering what ever happened. My five year old is doing exactly the same thing. I think she has anxiety --and is emotional (perhaps depressed) --but, wasn't traumatized / abused in any way. She had a speech delay when she was two ---is diagnoses free now though. The delay put her behind though --although not too behind. I believe it has affected her self esteem. I'm a marriage and family therapist myself --and really hesitate to take her to therapy --as I know it can make kids feel like there is something wrong with them (although many professionals will say it makes them feel special). I disagree. Any advice --since time has passed?
