I've been on it for a year now at 40mg, and while it does alleviate some stresses, anyone know if this is the right medicine?

Hi
I would say that Paxil does definitely help. I started picking when I was 18, and I would sometimes stay up all night picking not realising the time, until morning came and I was left with a nasty raw weeping face that I would need to absolutely cake in makeup in order to face the world. It was pretty bad. I should probably also say that I was involved with drugs and using speed which made things worse. I stopped taking speed at 21, but my picking continued, not as bad, but I would still pick and it still interfered with my life.
I started taking Paxil when I was 23, and stayed on it for 3 years. I can definitely say it made a huge difference in my picking. I still sometimes picked, but only to squeeze a spot - I didn't spend hours upon hours examining my skin in a magnifying glass to find the slightest bump which i could clear out from my skin. I think Paxil kind of calms down the obsessiveness somewhat - at least it did for me.
One other thing that helped is getting rid of my magnifying glass. I just threw it away, and haven't had one since. You don't really need one - a normal mirror is fine for looking at yourself/putting on makeup etc. - there's no need for a magnifying glass and it's so unhelpful as it literally makes mountains out of molehills!
I'm now 30 and I can honestly say I've stopped picking. I still suffered from acne despite the picking calming down, and I tried numerous lotions etc. from the doctor and even the antibiotics they give to people with plague and even that didn't help. It got to the point where my doctor told me the only thing that would stop me getting spots was having a child as it would sort my hormones out! BUT (and a big but!) I recently changed my diet and cut out all chocolate, sweets, crisps, Diet Coke - ie, junk basically. And my skin is the best it's ever looked in my life! My husband is forever commenting on how good my skin is, and even my work colleagues (whom I don't know very well due to being quite new) have commented on how clear my skin is.
Sorry for the long post! In summary: Paxil helped me a lot to stop the picking, as did getting rid of my magnifying glass. Cutting the rubbish out of my diet and eating healthily had a dramatic impact upon the condition of my skin.
I hope this helps, as I wish someone had told me this sooner myself!

No, don't take Paxil!!!! I have taken an equivalent of Paxil called Seroxat (both 'paroxetine') since I was fourteen, and not only it is very hard to do withdrawal and wean off Paxil, it can have very bad side effects as well. After a few years of use, you can get a so called 'poop out' wherin the symptoms you took the stuff for come back three times as hard and you have to pull up the dose untill the whole thing repeats again. In my poop out I was extremely suicidal and I was near to killing myself. My cognitive functions (memory and concentration) have decreased. You should read and ask about it at www.paxilprogress.org they know a lot about this stuff. There are other medicins that work just as good or better and will not damage you or make it hard to withdraw. Also, if you want to take Paxil, you really shouldn't use it longer than a few months, because the longer you take it the more difficult it is to stop. It can take years to wean off. And 40 mg is a huge dose joefromsi. 20 mg is an average dose and 10 mg usually is enough for whatever problems you may have. BTW. It didn’t help me as for picking my skin. PS. I am Maysun, but I've been waiting for approval for three days and still didn't get any response or approval. It's getting me really frustrated and I only got more reason to ruin my skin. SO PLEASE APPROVE MY ACCOUNT FOR GOD'S SAKE. I finally found a website dealing with my problem, offering help I need, and then I can't post like I should.

Everybody reacts different to meds. If it's not working for u, than u should talk about other options with your doctor. A SRI drug with a small dose of antipsychotic drug has been shown to help some people with ocd like compulsions. I'm on luvox and geodon, when the geodon was added, my picking decreased a lot.

I'm on luvox and geodon, when the geodon was added, my picking decreased a lot. that is true. I take Paxil and Geodon and before my Geodon messed up for me (long story) i didn't pick for 6 months. I was all healed up and it was amazing. I have OCD and impulse control problems and it was like a miracle cure. The side effects are the only thing that was a problem with Geodon but i was on a higher dose (60mg) due to the fact that i have Bipolar Disorder as well. I'm trying a lower dose now and we will see how it works. I started picking again without Geodon which sucks./
