Hi Pam.
I took it for about 6 months. I didn't recieve much help from it, except that I was usually in a good mood. The side effects are the reason I quit it. I felt very jumpy all the time. It was a strange sensation. It was like as long as everything was quiet, I was fine, but then any sudden movement or sound and I would be startled. It was almost dizzying. This lasted a few months after I quit. I also had a few panic attacks when I first started it.
I now take Celexa (citalopram) at 60mg per day. It doesn't have those side effects. I did experience some "speediness" and a tight throat as well as diarrhea for a few weeks when I first started. Now it is fine. It doesn't really help a lot with my picking though. Adding 200 mg per day of Seroquel has helped, all though I am still struggling a bit.
Good luck to you.
Fay

I took it quite a few years ago for different reasons and I don't remember it having an effect on my picking (I don't think I saw it as a problem back then).
But anyway, I think I was a lil hyper off it sometimes but it could've been for any number of reasons. Drugs like Prozac take at least a month to have a full effect, possibly 6 weeks. I can say it helped me a lot for what I was taking it for (impulse control for fighting wiith my family).
I am certain you have to take prozac with food. Maybe that has something to do with the dizziness?

:)Hey Becca thanks so much.I also have trouble and burst out easily with my family, special my kids,so if this doesn't work with the picking at least I hope it will work with the impulse control.I'm also trying to quit drinking and it's very very hard, today I had to make such a terrible effort in the market and not getting any beer, first because I think drinking is also making me break out and irçt would interfere with the prozac, I also had xanax and I think that's why I got so dizzy, I don't know if I can still take it while on fluoxetine.I had the pill with food...hope to be patient and see the results, cause I really believe there's a serious chemical basis causing all of these. I will let you know how it goes thanks pamela

Oh yeah, alchohol and prozac do not mix. I remember that being on the warning labels. Shouldn't whoever prescribed you the medicine know whether the two are safe to take together? I would not mix medications without medical advice (pharmacists are also very knowledgeable about these things). You're probably right, that there is a chemical basis, but it's also very important to get talk therapy and some guidance. I think it is wonderful that you are seeking help. I stopped fighting with my family for the most part (I also stopped taking any and all decongestant medications like sudafed and diet pills because it contains chemicals that make the blood pressure faster and made me very irritable. Sudafed is actually used to make crystal meth. I personally think it should be taken off the market also because it doesn't really help with colds). A little at a time, you can have a better life, just keep working toward it

Hi Becca well I guess I am my own pharmacist I've also took some of the drug you mentioned for cold and it's very very addictive, did it contain some kind of ephedrin I dont know what would it be called in English. Well I lowered the fluoxetine dose and try not to get any alcohol... I a've been reading lots and lots of pros and cons about medication and I don't know what to do. Thanks for your post hoper you're doing ok love Pam

Hmm. Well in the US we don't really get to decide our dosages and stuff, 'cause it all has to be doctor prescribed. (and I'm not a doctor so nothing I say about it can be considered advisable). I think you should talk to a doctor or pharmacist before messing with any dosages or mixing drugs because sometimes it can be very dangerous. Some drugs are addictive (prozac isn't) and it can be harmful to you to go off them too fast. And some interactions can also be very dangerous or actually just cause way more problems, possibly ones you don't even know about. If you see a psychiatrist you have a better chance of being properly diagnosed and put on the most appropriate medication and dosage (some people can react poorly to some meds or have a bad reaction). Of course, it can never hurt to stay away from that alcohol though. Maybe if you're having a stressed out day and feel like you need a drink you could go for a walk or run or something instead?
A lot of online sources can be unreliable and unscientific as well. In order for a source to be taken seriously it should be from a medical journal and also, you can never go by one study alone. Medical studies need to be repeated many times before they can be considered reliable. A lot times we hear reports on the news that deal with only one study. A lot of times we read articles or from sources that are being promoted by the people who actually make the drugs (which makes them very biased and possibly corrupt).
Sudafed is an over-the-counter and I think it is similar to ephedrin. I used to take one or two almost every day as a teen. I couldn't control my anger at all. Now I avoid it at all costs (along with any diet pills 'cause they have similar chemicals).
take care, becca

HI THERE; CAN you guys please let me know if fluoxetine works? I'm a little confused and I really am at the point that I feel that only meds will work-- now it's just a matter of finding the right one. Thanks! phonegirldaisy1@verizon.net

Hey there, I'm a 24-year old girl from Germany. I used to suffer from severe dermatillomania and depression since I was about 15. Two years ago, I managed to quit for 2 months with positive affirmations and relaxation. Unfortunately, I relapsed.
I've been on Fluoxetin (Prozac) for about 7 months and I'm pick-free! The skin is just not an issue anymore. I can DECIDE wheter I want to pick one single pimple or not and to leave the rest alone.
I take now 3 pills (20mg each) in the morning, which is the suggested dose for both depression and OCD. And it works fine. No more depression, no more picking. But it took some time to work, I raised the dose slowly.
So, for me, it works great! I can just get up in the morning, apply some eyliner and mascara and I'm feeling beautiful. Never thought this could happen. I am finally able to lead a "normal" life. I'm still in therapy and have some issues that I need to overcome, but my overall feeling is so much better than during the last 9 years.
I guess it does not work for everyone, but I recommend you give it a try.
All the best!
