I spoke to a counsellor first and was referred to a psychiatrist for a medical discussion of my symptoms. I continued with counselling for a long time, and will go back to it soon. I only see my psychiatrist about meds. A doctor can also refer you to a psychiatrist and a counsellor. Good luck!

Actually, any doctor including psychiatrists can prescribe medicines. However, it is often better to go through a psychiatrist because they have more related knowledge and experience. Psychiatrists do some counselling, but where I live they are in high demand and it doesn't allow for a lot of time per patient. I only see mine a few times per year. I saw my counsellor once every week or 2.

you can go to your family doctor, and get some info of medications. he/she can also refer you to a psychiatrist, therapist, etc
this is what i did, and it was great to have all of my doctors aware of what was going on and working together

Hey shihui, I went to a doctor who referred me to a psychiatrist.. they're job is basically to prescribe medicines, although these help they don't work for everyone. It might be a good idea to see a psychologist who will counsel you and they usually work closely toegther with psychiatrists..if you can..get a psychologist who does cognitive-behavioural therapy (reverses your habits) as this is the most common therapy for OCD. Your best bet is to get a combination of treatments going and see what works for you. For example...take prescribed medication and have therapy with the medication supporting your progress, so you'll finally be able to do it on your own. If you're from the Uk, for an immediate source of info and help try this: [ftp]www.ocdcentre.com[/ftp] They'll do free over the phone therapy with you and talk about your problem, I'm doing it and its really gd.
