HERE'S WHY FOR FLAX:
1. Who should use VitaMedica’s Flax Seed Oil supplement? Because most individuals do not eat the variety and quality of foods to obtain the two essential fatty acids, Flax Seed Oil is indicated for anyone over 12 years of age.
2. What is Flax Seed Oil and why is it important to take? Flax Seed Oil is an essential fatty acid (EFA) supplement. An essential fatty acid is a nutrient that is very important for health and must be obtained through diet or supplementation. Essential fatty acids play critical roles in body functions and structures. They are transformed into regulatory compounds known as prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are important in the regulation of inflammation, pain and swelling; blood pressure; heart function; blood clotting and platelet aggregation; allergic response; steroid production and hormone synthesis.
3. What Role Do Essential Fatty Acids Play with healthy skin? Healthy-looking skin requires essential fatty acids. Skin properly nourished with EFAs is smoother, looks velvety instead of greasy, feels softer and shows less acne, dryness, blackheads, whiteheads and other skin conditions. The skin is also infected less easily, looks radiant, ages more slowly and remains wrinkle-free longer. The reason why this is true is because a large proportion of skin is comprised of fat with essential fats as the main components of cellular membranes. For this reason, the composition and quality of the fats that are supplied to the body are very important. In fact, cracked nails; dry, lifeless hair; eczema; dry skin and other skin conditions are often caused by a deficiency of the EFAs.
Without sufficient EFAs, the skin loses water, producing a dry rough appearance. And while applying creams topically may temporarily solve the problem, the best long-term solution is to provide lubrication internally. For individuals who have oily skin, too much oil may not be the problem. Oily skin may be caused by excessive levels of saturated fat, which alters the fat composition of the skin and makes the body produce excessive oil-like substances.
4. What are the benefits of taking VitaMedica’s Flax Seed Oil supplement?
Internal Moisturization: Flax Seed Oil internally lubricates the skin. The supplement is particularly beneficial for individuals with mature skin, which is dryer due to reduced sebum production, leading to decreased moisture retention.
Improved Allergic & Inflammatory Response: A deficiency of Omega-3 fatty acids is often a contributory factor to many inflammatory conditions of the skin such eczema and psoriasis.
Better Hormonal Balance: The Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty essential fatty acids are precursors for prostaglandins, hormone-like compounds that regulate many bodily functions.
Increased Energy: Essential fatty acids increase cellular metabolism, thereby increasing energy and stamina.
Improved Cholesterol and Triglyceride Levels: Research has shown that Omega-3 fatty acids can improve cholesterol and trigylceride levels by effecting the liver metabolism of these compounds.
Enhanced Immune System Function: Omega-3 fatty acids are an essential element of many immune system processes. Evidence has shown that the essential Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids play a crucial role in the production and utilization of interferon, one of our body’s natural virus killers.
5. What makes VitaMedica’s Flax Seed Oil better than other brands’?VitaMedica’s Flax Seed Oil is made from 100% all-natural, organic flax seed oil that is naturally processed. Flax Seed Oil is rich in alpha-linolenic acid, an essential Omega-3 fatty acid. Flax Seed Oil is available as easy-to-swallow capsules that do not need to be refrigerated. As a result, Flax Seed Oil makes it easy for you to obtain your recommended daily intake of essential fatty acids.
6. What is the recommended dosage for VitaMedica’s Flax Seed Oil? The recommended dosage is 2-4 capsules per day. Individuals who have a healthy diet consisting of fruits and vegetables need to take fewer capsules (about 2). Those who eat less well, should take 3-4 capsules per day. Flax Seed Oil should be taken with food, either with breakfast or with dinner.
7. Why is it important to take Flax Seed Oil with food? It is better to take supplements with food because it helps with the absorption and assimilation of nutrients.
8. What are triglycerides? Triglycerides are the most common form of fat. Triglycerides are made up of fatty acids, both essential and non-essential, and glycerol. Triglycerides are responsible for providing our bodies with energy. The fatty acid portion of triglycerides can be saturated, monounsaturated or polyunsaturated. The degree of saturation has an impact on a person’s overall health. In fact, a diet high in saturated fat increases blood cholesterol levels. Conversely, a diet high in monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats tends to lower blood cholesterol.
9. What are the monounsaturated fatty acids? The monounsaturated fatty acids can be classified as either omega-7 or omega-9. Two important, but nonessential monounsaturated fatty acids include palmitoleic acid (omega-7) and oleic acid (omega-9). These fatty acids are not considered essential because the body can produce them. Palmitoleic acid is found in large quantities in tropical oils such as coconut and palm kernel. Oleic acid is found in large quantities in olive, avocado and peanut oils.

10. What are the essential polyunsaturated fats? The polyunsaturated fatty acids can be classified as either omega-3 or omega-6. Two polyunsaturated fatty acids that cannot be produced by the body and are therefore considered essential are alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3) and linoleic acid (omega-6). Alpha-linolenic acid (LNA) is important because it is necessary to build two other important fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Flax seed oil is an excellent source of LNA and the oils of cold-water fish are also a good source of EPA and DHA. Linoleic acid (LN) is important as a building block for gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). Various types of seed oils provide high levels of LN including safflower, sunflower and sesame. Borage, black currant and evening primrose oil contain 24%, 18% and 9% GLA, respectively.
11. How does Flax Seed Oil differ from fish oil capsules? Flax Seed Oil is made from the oil of flax seeds. Flax seeds contain the highest amount of alpha-linolenic acid by weight (57%). Fish oil primarily contains DHA and EPA oils, which the body converts from alpha-linolenic acid. Fish oils can be considerably more expensive that flax oil and can contain contaminants from the fish.
12. Why have Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) received so much attention lately? While most individuals are struggling to reduce their fat intake, it seems illogical to recommend taking an oil supplement. However, the problem is not so much in the quantity of fat ingested (about 30% of total caloric intake), but in the type. Mass commercial refinement of fats, oil products, and the foods containing them has effectively eliminated the essential fatty acids from our food chain. At the same time, there has been a tremendous increase in the amount of unnatural fats and oils that are consumed by Americans. This includes trans-fatty acids or partially hydrogenated fats. In 1909, Americans consumed 125 grams of fat per day. Today, Americans consume closer to 175 grams per day. The use of drugs, pharmaceuticals, sugar, caffeine, refined carbohydrates and alcohol also cause deficiencies of EFAs. Finally, as we age, our body’s ability to produce the fatty acids EPA and DHA is reduced.
13. What are partially-hydrogenated fats? All fats break down when exposed to oxygen resulting in the spoilage or rancidity of the fat. Because of their chemical structure, polyunsaturated fats are particularly susceptible to oxidation. This presents a problem for food manufacturers because fats that spoil easily have a very short shelf life. In order to get around the problem, a process called hydrogenation is used. The process changes the chemical structure of the unsaturated fat and in effect, makes it more saturated. The result is trans-fatty acids, which raise blood cholesterol levels much like saturated fats. These unnatural fats also inhibit the body’s ability to use the essential fatty acids it consumes.
Trying to avoid foods that contain hydrogenated oils is not easy. In determining whether a product contains hydrogenated oil, you need to look for the term “partially hydrogenated”. Unfortunately, most packaged foods contain this type of oil. In particular, hydrogenated oils are typically found in margarine, breads, crackers, cookies and pastries. If you start reading labels, you will be amazed at how many products contain this harmful ingredient. (FOODS WITH THIS ARE THE ANTI-CHRIST)
14. Can patients experience any side effects while taking VitaMedica’s Flax Seed Oil supplement? A result of taking Flax Seed Oil capsules is improved digestive regularity. Since this is an issue for many individuals, this effect is quite beneficial. However, as a precautionary note, it is recommended to start taking the supplement slowly, with 1 capsule per day. The dosage can be increased every two days until the maximum dosage is reached.
15. What is the shelf life of VitaMedica’s Flax Seed Oil? Each VitaMedica nutritional supplement has a shelf life of 2 years. However, it is important to understand what shelf life means. Products, such as milk and cheese, become rancid as they age beyond their shelf life. This is not true for nutritional supplements. The two-year shelf life guarantees that the amount of nutrients described in the Supplement Facts Panel is what an individual will receive. After two years, the amount of each nutrient will gradually diminish over time. This process will be accelerated if the supplement is stored under light or heat. VitaMedica supplements include a date code on the back of each label, which indicates when the product expires (e.g., 09 02 expires in September 2002).
16. Do the Flax Seed Oil capsules need to be refrigerated? Although naturally processed oils like Flax Seed Oil are destroyed by heat and light, the blue bottle and gel capsule protect this delicate oil. As a result, the capsules do not need to be refrigerated. However, it is recommended that the product be kept away from direct sunlight and heat.
17. In addition VitaMedica’s Flax Seed Oil, should I take any other supplements to ensure good health? If so, how do I know what to take? Maybe. There are four basic recommendations to establish a solid nutritional program. First, take a high-quality multiple vitamin and mineral supplement. Second, take extra antioxidants. Third, take a source of essential omega-3 fatty acids. Once this basic level of nutrition is established, then herbal supplements or accessory nutrients can be taken for specific purposes or condition. This would include supplements such as glucosamine sulfate in the treatment of osteoarthritis or red clover for relief of menopausal symptoms.

HERE'S AM/PM MULTI 1. Who should use the Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement? Because most individuals do not eat the variety and quality of foods to obtain essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, the Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement is indicated for anyone over 12 years of age.
2. What are the benefits of the Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement? We all know that good nutrition is essential to our health and well-being. But, the reality is that most of us don’t follow a well-balanced diet on a regular basis. Of particular importance are fruits and vegetables. These foods are rich in antioxidants - nutrients our bodies need to fight free-radical damage. Free-radical damage is believed to contribute to aging. Antioxidants are also important for health because research indicates that these nutrients provide a protective role in the three leading causes of death: heart disease, cancer and stroke. The Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement provides optimal levels of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to ensure good health.
3. What makes VitaMedica’s Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement better than other brands’? Quality. Like many things in life, you get what you pay for and the same is true with nutritional supplements. Because VitaMedica’s Multi-Vitamin and Mineral supplement is so complete, no other vitamin or mineral supplements need to be taken. The supplement is available in a morning and evening formulation. The use of time, or chronotherapy, provides the right nutrients at the right time of day. In addition, divided doses ensure optimal absorption of the water-soluble vitamins. Third, the formulation contains natural vitamins, which provide better absorption than their synthetic counterparts. The supplement also contains the right balance of vitamins & minerals to eliminate the worry about whether you’re taking the right amount, or in the right combination. And, the product contains chelated minerals for maximal absorption. The supplement does not contain any preservatives, excipients, binders, or fillers which cause allergic reactions.
4. What is the recommended dosage for the Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement? The recommended dosage is 3 tablets in the morning and 3 tablets in the evening. The AM formulation should be taken with breakfast. If a small breakfast is eaten (such as an apple or banana), then the tablets should be taken with lunch. The PM formulation should be taken with dinner or before bedtime.
5. Why is the Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement provided in a Two-Part formula? The morning and evening formulations were designed to provide the right nutrients at the right time of day. For example, the AM formulation contains nutrients needed to stay energized and alert, with stable blood glucose levels during the day (e.g., B-complex, chromium), and cope with stress. Conversely, the PM formulation contains nutrients needed during the evening to promote rest and relaxation, enhance dreaming during sleep and restore brain neuro-chemicals (e.g., calcium and other minerals). Another reason for taking the supplements in this way is because most often that is when food is eaten. Vitamins and minerals are better absorbed when taken with food. A third reason for taking supplements in the morning and evening is that the water-soluble vitamins (Vitamin C and the B-Complex) are better absorbed if taken in divided doses. These nutrients are not stored in the tissues like the fat-soluble vitamins. For this reason, any excess taken is excreted through the urine.
6. I noticed that the AM tablets are yellow and the PM tablets are white. What is the reason for this and is the yellow color a dye? Although the morning formulation is yellow, it is naturally colored by the B-vitamin riboflavin and is quite safe. The color-coding is helpful for patients to distinguish between their daytime and evening supplements.
7. Why is it important to take the Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement with food?It is better to take supplements with food because it helps with the absorption and assimilation of nutrients, especially the fat-soluble vitamins.
8. Can patients experience any side effects while taking the Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement? In general, VitaMedica products are remarkable free of side effects. However, about 10% of patients can experience the so-called “niacin flush” with high-potency vitamins. The niacin flush involves a temporary reddening of the skin that lasts about 10-15 minutes. Usually it will disappear after one or two days of taking the vitamins. The niacin flush can be prevented by slowly building up to the full dose. When starting the vitamins, simply reduce the dose to one tablet for 1-2 days, then two tablets for 1-2 days, and so forth. Taking our vitamins in this fashion will decrease the chances of the niacin-flush occurring. It will also help to prevent the uneasy sensation that occurs in some people's stomach after taking vitamins.
9. I have trouble taking tablets. I also find that the tablets can create an upset stomach. Is there anything I can do to help take the tablets? For those who have trouble taking tablets, eating a banana beforehand can help to slide the tablets down the throat. For those who have a sensitive stomach, it becomes even more important to take the tablets with food. At VitaMedica, we recommend a frozen fruit smoothie recipe. Smoothies are great for people on the go and make taking the products much easier.
10. Many of the nutrients in the Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement are well above the Recommended Daily Intake (RDI). Why are the amounts this high and are they safe? The RDAs or Recommended Daily Allowances are nutritional guidelines that were originally established in 1941 by the National Academy of Sciences. Since their establishment, many studies have been conducted regarding the use of vitamins, minerals, herbs and other nutritional supplements. The Guidelines reflect the minimum requirements to achieve health but do not take into consideration sex, age, weight, activity levels and other dietary factors. For this reason, the RDAs are viewed as being deficient particularly as it relates to key antioxidants such as Vitamin E and Vitamin C. Instead, Optimal Dosages have been established by industry leaders and better reflect requirements based on recent findings from research and longitudinal studies. Each VitaMedica supplement has been formulated to contain optimal amounts of each ingredient that provide for efficacy and safety.
11. The Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement contains 15,000 IUs of Vitamin A. What is Vitamin A’s role in health? Vitamin A, or retinol, is a fat-soluble essential nutrient that must be obtained through diet or supplementation. Vitamin A is well-known for its role in eye health, growth and development, reproduction, and immune system function.
Vitamin A is especially important for the skin because it can prevent skin disorders and help treat superficial wrinkles. Vitamin A can be quite effective for skin conditions that involve hyperkeratosis including acne and psoriasis. This nutrient is also needed for maintenance and repair of epithelial tissue and helps remove age spots.
The body can also obtain vitamin A by converting carotenes into retinol. Carotenes are a group of fat-soluble compounds that are responsible for giving many fruits and vegetables their color. A number of carotenes can be converted into retinol and include beta-, alpha-, and gamma-carotene. Compared to retinol, the carotenes have significant antioxidant protective benefits. Since free-radical damage isbelieved to play a role in aging, supplementing with carotenes is an important part of any anti-aging program. Research has also shown that carotenes play a protective role in the prevention of epithelial cancer (including skin and gastro intestinal).

12. The Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement contains 300 mg of Vitamin C. Why is Vitamin C important for health? Vitamin C or ascorbic acid, is an important water-soluble essential nutrient that is important for antioxidant protection. Vitamin C plays a primary role in the formation of collagen and is needed for tissue growth and repair. This important nutrient promotes the healing of wounds, and protects against blood clotting and bruising. It also protects against the harmful effects of pollution, helps to prevent cancer and enhances immunity.
13. The Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement contains 375 IUs of Vitamin D. Why is Vitamin D important for health? Vitamin D is necessary for the growth and development of bones & teeth. This fat-soluble vitamin is also important in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Vitamin D is also required for the proper absorption & utilization of calcium and phosphorus.
14. The Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement contains 315 IUs of Vitamin E. Why is Vitamin E especially important for health? Vitamin E refers to a group of fat-soluble essential nutrients called tocopherols. Of the eight tocopherols, the most effective is d-alpha-tocopherol (also known as natural Vitamin E). Vitamin E is an important antioxidant that prevents oxidation of fats and Vitamin A. Vitamin E also promotes healing, and healthy skin and hair. This nutrient retards aging, enhances UV blockers in sunscreen and is a natural moisturizer. Although Vitamin E is most noted for its significant protective role against heart disease, stroke and cancer, this compound is also commonly used to treat acne, eczema, and dermatitis.
15. The Supplements Facts Panel refers to the source of Vitamin E as d-alpha tocopherol. What is this form and is Vitamin E from the tocotrienals a better form? Alpha-tocopherol is the chemical name for the most active form of Vitamin E. Alpha-tocopherol can be supplied in either the synthetic or the natural form. The distinction is easy to make – the natural form, which is derived from soybeans, is referred to as “d-alpha-tocopherol”. The synthetic form, which is synthesized from petroleum, is referred to as “dl-alpha-tocopherol”. The distinction is important because studies have shown that natural ingredients are more readily absorbed and utilized by our body than their synthetic counterparts. Other forms of Vitamin E are available and include the tocotrienols. While beneficial, research has shown the alpha-tocopherol form is superior to the tocotrienol form of Vitamin E.
16. The Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement contains 75 mcg of Vitamin K. Why is Vitamin K especially important for health? Vitamin K is an essential nutrient needed for bone formation and repair and for blood clotting. Vitamin K, along with Vitamin D and calcium, play an important role in the prevention of the bone thinning condition called osteoporosis.
17. The Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement contains the full complex of B-Vitamins. What is the importance of the B-Vitamins for health? The B-Complex refers to the family of water-soluble B-vitamins including B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin, niacinaminde), B5 (panthothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B12 (cobalamin), folic acid, PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid), biotin, choline and inositol.
As a group, the B-complex is important for circulatory, digestive and nervous system function; energy and adrenal hormone production; and red blood cell formation. The B-complex, known as the “anti-stress” vitamins, is also well-suited during periods of stress including after an operation or surgical procedure. The B-complex is so named because they are commonly found together in foods. Because the functions of the B-vitamins are so interrelated, it is best to take them as a complex and not as single supplements.
18. The Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement does not contain any iron. I thought iron was important; why is this mineral not included? Women of child-bearing age need to make sure that they obtain an adequate amount of iron. Iron is important for growth, promoting resistance to disease and preventing fatigue. However, iron-containing supplements should only be taken after lab tests show an iron deficiency. This is important because iron-overload is twice as common as iron deficiency.
19. The Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement contains 750 mg of calcium. What is the importance of calcium for health? Calcium is a bulk mineral that maintains strong bones and healthy teeth and helps to keep the skin healthy. Calcium also aids the nervous system and is important for maintenance of a regular heartbeat.
20. As a woman, shouldn’t I be getting at least 1,000 – 1,200 mg of calcium a day to prevent against osteoporosis? The literal interpretation of osteoporosis is “porous bone”. It is a condition that affects primarily women because of physiological, nutritional and hormonal differences between the sexes. Osteoporosis involves a lack of calcium and other minerals, as well as a decrease in the non-mineral framework of the bone. Unless otherwise directed by their doctor, women over 35 should obtain about 1,000 – 1,200 mg of calcium a day. However, this amount should be provided in both food and in supplement form. This is because minerals, such as calcium, are better absorbed when provided in this combination.

21. In addition to calcium, the Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement contains a number of other minerals. What is the importance of these minerals in health? Like vitamins, minerals are essential components in enzymes (molecules involved in speeding up chemical reactions that are necessary for human bodily function). Minerals are also essential for proper vitamin absorption, which is why they should be taken together. The Multi-Vitamin and Mineral supplement includes the following minerals:
Magnesium (450 mg) is important for converting blood sugar into energy, assists in calcium and potassium uptake, and is essential for effective nerve and muscle functioning.
Zinc (15 mg) is an antioxidant that is essential for protein synthesis and collagen formation. Zinc helps to prevent acne and regulate activity of oil glands, promotes healing of wounds, and increases the absorption of Vitamin A.
Selenium (120 mcg) is an antioxidant that works to protect other antioxidants such as Vitamin E and is important in keeping tissues elastic.
Manganese (4.5 mg) is a component of an important antioxidant enzyme called superoxide dismutase or SOD. This enzyme is extremely important in removing free-radicals from the body’s cells.
Chromium (210 mcg) works with insulin in the metabolism of sugar and is needed for energy.
Copper (1,500 mcg) aids in the formation of bone, hemoglobin and red blood cells. Copper works in balance with Vitamin C and zinc to form elastin, and is essential for the formation of collagen.
Molybdenum (150 mcg) is a trace mineral that is needed for proper sulfur metabolism. Molybdenum aids in carbohydrate and fat metabolism and promotes normal cell function.
Potassium (75 mg) is a bulk mineral that works with sodium to regulate the body’s water balance. Potassium is important for a healthy nervous system and a regular heartbeat.
Boron (1,500 mcg) is needed for healthy bones. This mineral also aids in the metabolism of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium.
22. I’ve heard that I should be getting 1,000 – 2,000 mg of Potassium a day. Is this true and if so, why doesn’t the Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement contain this amount? Most individuals obtain far too much sodium in their diet and not enough potassium. While it is recommended that an individual obtain about 3,500 mg of potassium per day in their diet, it is difficult to obtain this amount from just supplements. Foods that are high in potassium include apricots, avocados, bananas, brewer’s yeast, brown rice, dates, figs, dried fruit, garlic, nuts, potatoes, raisins, wheat bran and yams.
23. I noticed in the Supplement Facts panel the word “chelate” after each mineral. What does chelate mean? In general, our bodies absorb vitamins without much difficulty, but minerals are not absorbed so well. Chelation is a process that combines a mineral with an amino acid. This process of chelation enhances the absorption of the minerals by “fooling” the body into thinking it is absorbing the amino acid attached to the mineral. The mineral is pulled into the body along with the amino acid, ensuring its absorption. Chelated minerals are more expensive because of the extra step required to attached the amino acid to the mineral. However, this expense is worth it due to the improved absorption.
24. The Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement contains 105 mgs of Citrus Bioflavonoids. Why are the bioflavonoids important for health? The Citrus Bioflavonoids refer to a group of substances that are responsible for giving fruits and vegetables their color. Bioflavonoids have excellent antioxidant properties, providing protective benefits for plants. These benefits are passed onto humans when consumed as foods. Citrus bioflavonoids enhance the absorption of Vitamin C, have an antibacterial effect and promote circulation.
25. The Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement contains 90 mg of inositol. What is the importance of inositol for health? Inositol is part of the “B-complex” family of vitamins. Inositol is vital for hair growth and promotes healthy hair. Inositol has a calming effect and helps to reduce cholesterol levels. Inositol also helps in the prevention of eczema.
26. The Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement contains 72 mg of choline. What is the importance of choline for health? Choline is part of the “B-complex” family of vitamins. Choline works with inositol (another B-complex vitamin) to utilize fats and cholesterol. Choline aids hormone production and is needed for the proper transmission of nerve impulses, liver function and gallbladder regulation.
27.What is the shelf life of the Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement?
28. In addition the Multi-Vitamin & Mineral supplement, should I take any other supplements to ensure good health? How do I know what to take? Most likely. Before deciding if you should take any other supplements, you should make sure that a basic level of nutrition has been established. At VitaMedica, we use an approach called the Nutritional Supplement Pyramid (NSP). The NSP is similar to the well-known food guide pyramid. In the food guide pyramid, certain foods (e.g., whole grains, vegetables, and fruits) are emphasized and recommended as the basis of a healthy diet. Other foods, such as dairy and meat products are recommended in smaller amounts. The food guide pyramid acts as a guide for people to make logical and healthy choices about the foods and beverages they consume daily. Likewise, the nutritional supplement pyramid is designed to ensure a logical approach to nutritional supplement use.
There are four basic recommendations in the Nutritional Supplement Pyramid to establish a solid nutritional program. First, take a high-quality multiple vitamin and mineral supplement. Second, take a source of essential omega-3 fatty acids. Third, take extra antioxidants. Once this basic level of nutrition is established, then herbal supplements or accessory nutrients can be taken for specific purposes or condition. This would include supplements such as glucosamine sulfate in the treatment of osteoarthritis or red clover for relief of menopausal symptoms.

29. What factors influence a patient’s need for supplementation? Many factors affect a patient’s nutritional requirements and ultimately their need for supplementation, as indicated below:
Sex: Women and men have different nutritional needs. Osteoporosis is a condition that primarily affects women. In particular, women should make sure that they obtain enough calcium, magnesium, vitamin D and vitamin K. Women’s nutritional needs also change as they go through life (menstruation, pregnancy, breast-feeding, and menopause). Men also have unique requirements. Men need to make sure that they get plenty of zinc, vitamin A and vitamin E to help reduce the risk of developing prostrate problems.
Age: Aging may make it more difficult to absorb and utilize certain nutrients. The major problem nutrients for older people are vitamins D, C, B6 and B12, folic acid as well as minerals such as zinc. Research has shown that many diseases that we associate with aging such as stroke and heart disease may be prevented with adequate doses of vitamin E and B6, B12 and folic acid.
Nutritional Intake: While it is preferable to obtain nutrients from a healthy, well-balanced diet, most Americans fall short in a variety of key vitamins and minerals. In particular, most individuals do not get the recommended 5+ servings of fruit and vegetables each day. Women who diet are even more at risk because of the limited caloric intake. For these reasons, most people need to supplement their diet with a vitamin/mineral supplement.
Caffeine and Soft Drink Consumption: Not only coffee contains caffeine but tea, carbonated beverages and chocolate. In addition, over the counter medications (OTC) can contain caffeine (e.g., Excedrin 65 mg, Midol 32 mg, Dexatrim 200 mg). While some caffeine is fine, too much contributes to dehydration and robs the body of the B vitamins, vitamin C, potassium and zinc. Soft drinks such as Mountain Dew contain caffeine (50 mg) but also should be avoided because they contain high levels of phosphates, which cause the excretion of calcium.
Alcohol Consumption: Alcohol can affect the availability, absorption and metabolism of essential nutrients. It can deplete the body of the B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin K, zinc, magnesium and potassium.
Cigarette Smoking: Individuals who smoke have a much higher level of free radicals in their body. Additionally, cigarette smoking can reduce the body’s ability to absorb key vitamins and minerals. Because of this, smokers and individuals exposed to second-hand smoke need to make sure that they obtain adequate levels of the antioxidants such as vitamin E, vitamin A, vitamin C and selenium.
Birth Control Pill, Antibiotics and OTC Drugs: These medications change the body’s requirements particularly for the B vitamins. In addition, many OTC drugs such as diuretics and antacids can deplete the body of essential nutrients. Aspirin depletes the body of vitamin C.
UV Exposure /Sun Tanning: Exposure to sunlight and even fluorescent lighting causes free-radical production. Therefore, it is important to make sure that antioxidant intake is adequate. Important antioxidants are vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, and selenium. Green tea extract, grape seed extract, and co-enzyme Q10 are also potent free-radical scavengers.
Chemical/Pollutant Exposure: Daily we are exposed to a variety of pollutants from the air we breathe, the food we eat and the environment in which we live. Like sun exposure, pollutants cause our bodies to produce free radicals. Sufficient antioxidant intake is required to combat free-radical damage.
Stress: While some stress is good, repetitive stress depletes the building blocks the adrenal glands need to manufacture hormones. These building blocks include vitamin C, vitamin B5 and B6, magnesium, zinc and potassium.

THIS IS THE ONE I SHOULD BE TAKING ALSO BUT I NEED SOME MONEY, HEALTHY SKIN:
1. Who should use Healthy Skin Formula? An individual with an inflammatory skin condition such as acne, psoriasis or eczema. The supplement is safe for anyone over 12 years of age.
2. What are the benefits of Healthy Skin Formula? Although an inflammatory skin condition such as acne can strike at any age, its onset is most often related to a change in hormones. Excess androgen production can cause the sebaceous glands to excrete more sebum. This in turn clogs the follicle and allows a bacterium called p. acnes to build. This results in inflammation and either a white or black head forms depending on whether the pore is closed or open, respectively. In other instances, acne is a result of poor skin health. Finally, acne can be as a result of a toxic overload of the system. Healthy Skin Formula is designed to address each of the stages of acne development. The supplement contains nutrients that promote skin health, reduce sebum production, enhance inflammatory control and have antiseptic properties.
3. How do prescription and over the counter (OTC) medications for acne differ from nutritional supplements? Many topical treatments for the care of acne and inflammatory disorders of the skin are available. While effective, these regimens contain products that generate activity primarily on the outer layer of the skin. Although the topical approach represents the foundation of good skin care, it also makes sense to address what is going on internally. That’s because what you put inside your body is just as important as what you apply externally. Other acne treatments, including prescription medications such as antibiotics and Accutane®, can have powerful activity along with significant side effects. Natural medicines tend to be milder, safer and are far less likely to cause negative reactions.
4. Can diet affect acne and other skin problems? This question has garnered significant debate in the medical community. However, it is widely believed that in addition to genetics, lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and stress reduction have an impact on a person’s health status. While hormones can directly impact acne, studies have shown that some acneic patients have intestinal toxemia (toxins build up in the intestine as a result of poor nutrition). Other studies have found that patients with psoriasis and eczema improve their condition with alpha-linolenic (Omega-3) essential fatty acid supplementation. It simply makes sense that the quality of nutrients consumed will affect the quality of an individual’s skin.
5. What levels of the skin do nutritional supplements effect? Although today’s topical products have come a long way in improving their delivery systems, the reality is that these products can’t really penetrate below the epidermal layer. This is because the skin’s defense system is designed to make penetration difficult to prevent against the elements and infection. The system also protects the skin from the loss of moisture, hormones, proteins and essential nutrients. Unlike topicals, nutritional supplements are delivered to the epidermis and to the dermal layer via the bloodstream. In this way, essential nutrients help to build new cells (including collagen and elastin), provide free-radical protection and contribute to a host of other skin cellular activities.
6. What is the bi-directional approach used by VitaMedica? The combination of external, or topical skin care and internal skin care. The bi-directional approach, provides a synergistic effect that gives the skin its greatest potential for health and beauty.
7. What is the recommended dosage for Healthy Skin Formula? The recommended dosage is 2 capsules per day: 1 in the morning with breakfast and 1 in the evening with dinner or before bedtime.

8. Why is it important to take Healthy Skin Formula with food? It is better to take supplements with food because it helps with the absorption and assimilation of nutrients. While we recommend that the supplements be taken in the morning with breakfast and in the evening with dinner, there is some flexibility to that guideline. For individuals who do not eat breakfast, they can take their morning supplement at lunchtime. The evening supplement can also be taken within 2-3 hours after dinner.
9. Some of the nutrients in Healthy Skin Formula are above the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA). Why are the amounts higher and are their levels safe?
10. Healthy Skin Formula contains 12,500 IUs of Vitamin A. Why is Vitamin A important for inflammatory skin conditions? Vitamin A, or retinol, is a fat-soluble essential nutrient that must be obtained through diet or supplementation. Vitamin A is well known for its role in eye health, growth and development, reproduction, and immune system function.
Since free-radical damage is believed to play a role in aging, supplementing with carotenes is an important part of any anti-aging program. Research has also shown that carotenes play a protective role in the prevention of epithelial cancer (including skin and gastro intestinal).
11. The Supplement Facts Panel indicates that 7,500 IU of Vitamin A is from Betatene®. What is Betatene? Although most people have heard of beta-carotene, a number of other carotenes exist including alpha-carotene, gamma-carotene, lycopene, zeaxanthin, and lutein. While not all of the carotenes convert to Vitamin A, all provide excellent antioxidant protective benefits. Most supplements contain just beta-carotene and in many cases, the source is not natural but synthesized. Betatene is a naturally occurring blend of carotenes, which includes beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, cryptoxanthin, zeaxanthin and lutein. Research has shown that using a blend of antioxidants (in this case carotenes) provides better antioxidant protection than just a singular antioxidant.
12. Healthy Skin Formula contains 24 mg of zinc. Why is zinc important for inflammatory skin conditions? Zinc is a trace mineral that is essential for protein synthesis and collagen formation. Zinc is also an antioxidant that promotes a healthy immune system and aids in the healing of wounds. Zinc increases the absorption of vitamin A and helps to prevent acne and to regulate the activity of the oil glands.
13. Healthy Skin Formula contains 48 mcg of selenium. Why is selenium important for inflammatory skin conditions? Selenium is an antioxidant that works to protect other antioxidants such as Vitamin E and is important in keeping tissues elastic. Research has also shown that a deficiency in selenium may play a role in inflammatory conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.
14. Healthy Skin Formula contains 150 mcg of chromium. Why is chromium important for inflammatory skin conditions? Chromium is a trace mineral that works with insulin in the metabolism of sugar and is needed for energy. Chromium also improves glucose tolerance and enhances insulin sensitivity. This is important for some acne patients who do not metabolize sugar properly.
16. Healthy Skin Formula contains bromelain. Why is bromelain important for inflammatory skin conditions? Bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme (digests protein) that is extracted from the root of the pineapple stem. Bromelain’s most common application is in the treatment of inflammation.
17. Healthy Skin Formula contains MSM. Why is MSM important for inflammatory skin conditions? MSM or methylsulfonylmethane is a natural form of organic sulfur that is necessary for collagen synthesis. MSM is very important in building the sulfur amino acids methionine and cysteine. MSM is also a natural antiseptic. By keeping skin cells soft, MSM allows skin to detoxify. MSM enhances tissue pliability and encourages the repair of damaged skin. The combination of MSM and Vitamin C works faster to heal wounds.
18. Healthy Skin Formula contains a number of herbs. Why are these herbs included and what is their importance for inflammatory skin conditions? The skin has a number of functions including temperature regulation, protection of the underlying tissues, fat storage, and immunity. Along with the kidneys, the skin plays a role in eliminating toxins from the body. In fact, the skin is often referred to as the “third kidney”. A number of herbs including burdock, dandelion, yellow dock, and Oregon grape, which are included in the formulation, are known for their potent cleansing properties of the skin and blood.
19. Are there any other VitaMedica supplements that are recommended to help with inflamed skin? Yes. Of particular importance to patients with inflammatory skin conditions is that they obtain an adequate intake of the essential Omega-3 fatty acids (alpha-linolenic acid or ALA). These nutrients, like vitamins and minerals, must be obtained through diet or supplementation. However, most individuals do not get enough essential fatty acids because they are obtained primarily through nuts, seeds and cold-water fish such as mackerel and salmon. An excellent source of the essential Omega-3 fatty acid is flax seed oil. Flax seed oil provides the highest concentration of this important nutrient (57% by weight). VitaMedica’s Flax Seed Oil capsules are quite beneficial for patients with inflammatory skin conditions.
20. What if a patient has both inflamed and aging skin – should they take both the Healthy Skin Formula and Broad Spectrum Antioxidant? It is not recommended for patients to take both supplements at the same time. The combined products would provide patients with a large dose of a limited number of nutrients (Vitamin A, Zinc, Chromium). Patients with inflamed skin should take the Healthy Skin Formula. If the inflammatory skin condition lessens or disappears over time, then it would be appropriate to switch over to the Broad Spectrum Antioxidant.
