I'd like to poll you guys on my own suspicions, which are the following: Eating sugar: exacerbates OSP Ingesting caffeine: exacerbates OSP Ingesting alcohol: exacerbates OSP
This is based on my own experience. Do you agree? Has anyone who quit imbibing in these dear-to-my-heart substances found that CSP improved? My suspicion is that these substances stimulate the nervous system and exacerbate the problem. Problem is, I love all these substances and can't seem to quit them----especially I love coffee!

If I have too much caffeine to the point where I'm hopped up on it I find myself slipping into that alternate picking zone. I don't go into that state very often anymore but I noticed a few months back (and started a thread on it) that when I had jitters from caffeine I was also getting very lost in picking. I try to drink tea now 'cause the caffeine supposedly time releases. It seems to keep me calmer, more awake, and in a better mood than coffee which causes a big crash after a while. Sugar I wouldn't know because I never give it up and alcohol I don't think causes me to pick but I usually drink socially and I'm too busy getting into trouble to pick when I'm drunk .

Did you know that coffee takes at least an hour to kick in?

Well, I don't drink (sober for 2 years). But since I got sober my caffeine and sugar intake has quadrupled. Actually so has my CSP. I think alcohol, being a depressant, plus the cocktail of drugs I used to do decreased my anxiety, thus decreased my CSP.

Very interesting. I "backslid" a bit last nite after a good week plus, after coming home from late night Valentine's Day shopping during which I had a cup of coffee to keep going. Your theory about the nervous system sounds reasonable. Also, for me, I tend to drink coffee when I feel I "need" a pick-me-up to push myself further than I really feel I have the energy to go. So, drinking coffee goes hand-in-hand for me with feeling run-down, generally weak, letting my guard down.

I think it depends on the person. Different people have different types of picking: some do it when they are stressed and some do it when they are bored. So I figure that these substances would have different effects on different people.
