Hey, sup, people?
Just thought I'd pop in a thread to introduce myself. My name's Becca, I'm 22 (oops, I wrote 21, guess I'm not used to it yet). It's nice to find a bustling forum about this subject (came over from another board that isn't very busy). I've been exploring a lot of my self image issues lately and I think my habit of picking blemishes and pores has a lot to do with those issues. Looking forward to being able to seek support when I need it and lend some as well. (A few minutes ago I was just thinking about some people who have caused me a lot of stress recently, while picking, and I realized I really don't want those people to be the cause of a huge mess on my face and body). Maybe I'll even be able to find a constructive way to express these issues and be able to help others, who knows.
Later, yo.

Wow, so, I actually feel like I'm doing better over the past few days. I have nowhere near stopped picking completely but I've treated my whole face a couple of days with Desitin Creamy, because I had a lot of scabs, and so they became less visible fast, and since then I think I just haven't wanted to get that ucky texture back so I've been spot treating more than picking, I think. It's pretty motivating because I think I'm PMSing (the time where acne gets out of control and nothing helps) and I seem to be leaving most of my face alone. I'm also getting really irritating allergy bumps that don't even really "pop" so maybe just the fact that I have no idea what to do with them is what is keeping me from picking. I'm also just feeling overall better about my self-image.

desitin??? Does that work?? I have desitin!!!m ::runs to the medicine cupboard:: ;D
Hey I have the same problem about acne and pms ... when it gets outta control i wash those areas with toothpaste.. lol yea i know it sounds dumb,, buuuuuuttt it a) kills the bacteria on the skin and penetrates the dead skin... b) helps bleach old scars... c) dries out and hardens current "soft scabs"... making them heal better...

anonymousartist, if the bumps you are having are definitely allergy bumps have you thought about taking some antihistamine to reduce the irritation? scarreddaisy, i know how drying the soft scabs appears to make them heal quicker but i also think it prob makes scarring worse. i say this because i found a product (they stick like band aids, but are like a transparent membrane. see, www.boots.com/shop/product_enlarge.jsp?productid=1009410&slmRefer=000&imageid=1 for example) that is for wound healing which reduces scarring by keeping the scab moist, but not wet. presumably this reduces the pulling on the skin that happens when scabs dry and contract, as the body attempts to close the wound edges. check an undergrad physiology text for more fascinating detail on skin healing, if youre interested in the underlying mechanism!!! happy to give you the name of the one i consulted... with page numbers, if you like. in fact i just checked the back of the box and it says wounds heal more effectively if they are not allowed to dry out, and that moist wound healing has been used in hospitals for many years... reduced scarring faster healing yada yada. ask a dermatologist for advice on this if you think it might help. take care all and keep up the good work. rae xxx

well if we were concerned about scars we wouldnt be picking in the first place would we? I think scars are the least of our concerns ...1..
2.. for ance, it works wonderfully.. i have used the following topical ointments, benzecline, clindaminicin, differn, tazorac... they work well but dry you out so your skin hurts... toothpaste is a wash that acutally allows the meds to get into teh skin better... ance is caused by our skin cells that are dead.. not flaking off properly, getting stuck in the oils and building up into a white/black head...
3.. it fades old scars... I have lots of scars on my back and i find that if i use toothpaste and then go tanning I can someone even out the varaition in pigmentation...
4... there is nothing worse thatn having something open and weeping ( especially on an area of your body that is visible..) If drying it our makes it scar a little more, oh well.. because the bleaching agent in the paste will fade it with time anyway...
we all have our tricks to healing the damage, and I know that not everyone had tons of money to spend on beauty stuff....me being one of them... toothpaste does the same as my benzecline .. my benzecline will bleach out my clothes... same idea... im not saying use toothpaste on open sores ... no no no! (ouchies!) but for acne, especially swollen or even infected pores which im sure every acne sufferer has had at least one, it works well...
like i said before.. if scars were enough of a deterrant .... we wouldn't pick in the first place...

well, i do apologise... ! scars are an issue for me, and the thought of having them isnt a deterrent- but that doesnt mean i dont want to prevent them where i can. i noticed that a lot of people on this site do also seem concerned about this so i jus thought id mention it.

hey guys, thanks for replying.
As far as Desitin goes, it was something my mom always swore by. I used to not like it because of the awful smell and my skin was extra oily, and Desitin is oily as well. But Desitin Creamy is much lighter and has a nicer scent. It has properties that help healing and also allows your skin to breathe, plus it is moist (I didn't know about the moist healing) and you can put it on open sores and wounds (it was something my mom always put on cuts as well...coincidentally, on Oprah about a week ago I saw a story on a substance called "butt cream" about to hit the market that was also a diaper rash ointment but had been found to heal other sores and was being marketed as such, so I assume it has similar ingredients as desitin, and perhaps the concept will no longer seem so foreign).
As far as toothpaste goes...I haven't used it in a long time for acne. I would only spot-treat with it to begin with, mixed with water because if I put it all over it would actually burn my face (I guess I am very lucky, I don't really scar too easily). The problem with toothpaste is that it does dry out your skin (it's also a cause of chapped lips), and drying out your skin can cause more acne because it makes your oil glands go into overdrive (or so I hear). I hadn't thought about the bleaching before...I have very fair skin, so maybe I will try it on a scar and see if it works.
Oh, and yes I do try to put benedryl cream on allergy bumps, I guess I should be more adament about it though.
I find that this cheap aloe-gel I bought at wal-mart really helps with pms acne.
As far as my picking has gone in the past few days, I ended up giving in to it pretty badly because I pulled an all-nighter the other day and had some frustrating school events and so I was just tired as hell, and you know how that goes. I did have what I might consider a break-through though, because at first I stopped myself, thinking, "I do not need to pick at this to make it better," while going after some blackheads, "this is the disease." Just recognizing that I was doing this action out of purely the urge to pick, and not to try any even out my skin or anything (because we all know it makes it worse even when we feel at the time we're making something bad like a zit or a black-head go away) made such a difference because now I know I can eventually leave this disease behind, that there's no reason really to hold onto it. Of course being so sleepy did get the best of me after a while but I knew why, and the couple days since it's only been a few spots here and there. I need to get out of the habit of whipping out the compact mirror when I walk into the bathroom.
