Hi all, I haven't been here in quite a while but have been busy trying different meds. After lots of tries I've found it - Seroquel. 6.25mg taken in the morning. Seroquel is often prescribed in larger doses and at night, because it's sedating, but it didn't help me that way.
I've been picking for eight years now and was giving up hope of ever having a clear face. I'm still picking a little bit on my legs/arms, but it's much more minor, and I haven't picked my face in a week. I started a skincare routine and for the first time in years, there are no scabs/oozy bits/crusty bits on my face. I can actually leave the house with no makeup on. It's incredible! I still have the urge to check my skin for bumps, but I can just look at them and not pick them - my fingers don't feel so itchy.
I wanted to share this with you in the hopes that someone else out there will have luck with this med. It seems that many antipsychotics can be used to treat this, but there's no way to know which med/dosage will work - you have to try them all and see what happens, and it's a long and frustrating process. I hope everyone else can find something that helps them too, and hang in there throught the process as best you can. Take care you guys. xx

does this medication help clear up skin, or help control your picking?

Hello, Me too! I take 800 mg a day, 400 in the am and 400 in the pm... it helps control the obsession of picking, not clearing the acne but helping you not to make it worse. I've also done accutane and that works for acne, it's a miracle! With the two combined.. I'm way better off than I was! Shadow

These anti-psychotic drugs scare me. They seem to have so many side-effects, some of which are quite severe. Check out this page about the drug "Seroquel" specifically mentioned in the first post ( www.medicinenet.com/quetiapine/article.htm).

Anti-psychotics are known for their side effects...it's one reason a lot of psychotic people don't stay on their meds. One of the reasons SSRI's took off as popular anti-depressants is because they have so few side effects compared to previous drugs.
I think we all need to work with what is best for us and if we take meds make sure that it is accompanied by effective talk therapy.

I am now upto 300mgs a day of seroquel..I have had no side effects other than sleepiness (thats why I take them at night)...I have been on 300mgs for quite some time now and I think I need to up it another 25mgs....it has helped me control the picking but I am starting to have a few episodes now and then...no other drug has helped me, and as I stated before, I have tried them all
unfortunately, if one does experience side effects, they can be severe...like the involuntary movements
if you try this drug, you will start out slow at 25mg and work your way up...so if you experience any side effects you just wean yourself off the drug
good luck to all of you
