Hi All,
I can't believe I found this site (and that there are several others just like it). Amazing to find that some "weird thing" that you do is a problem for many, many people....
Anyway, I've been picking, or should I say squeezing for about 20 years. I'm 40 now and am finally realizing that my skin isn't really bad, and what I have is probably no more than very mild acne, but it's the squeezing that makes it all look so terrible. I had an experience this week that finally made the lights go on so to speak.
I'd gone to the doctor just to get him to write me a new prescription for some nasal spray for my allergies. Anyway, it was late in the day and I realized my makeup looked kinda crappy. (Like many of you, I've become a master makeup artist out of necessity). I was wiping it off with a small cosmetic sponge and was going to fix it when the doctor came in and said, "OH! What happened to your face?" Needless to say I was mortified and had to explain that I was there for allergies and not my face at all. Later on when he wrote me my prescription I asked if he'd prescribe some anti-biotics which I've been on and off of over the years. He agreed and off I went.
That was Monday night and I've squeezed just two things since then, which for me is a miracle. It's very hard, fighting the urge but my thought is that once the anti-biotics kick in a bit it will get easier because there will be less stuff on my face to "tempt" me. I still find it impossible to leave the house with any kind of whitehead, so I allow myself that. What I won't do is "go exploring" and look for tiny little bumps which I then squeeze into monsterous legions.
So, it's one day at a time here. I'm hoping that eventually the urge dissipates along with the behavior, but who knows.
Good luck to all who are trying to kick this thing. I'm glad to have found you.
Liz
