i read about the desitin creamy and the butt paste in another thread. i left the butt paste on my face overnight last night and saw promising results. skin didn't seem like it "needed" to be picked like it usually does, issues seemed to cover easier with make-up. i read on their website that it's available nationwide at target and walmart. secondly, i searched the web extensively last night and one medication in conjunction with an ssri seems like something i should consider as my picking has been unresponsive to my ssri, zoloft. Naltrexone is the name. if you search for naltrexone and skin picking you will come up with quite a bit of information on its efficacy in treating our disorder. From what I gather, it is an opioid receptor blocker (or something like that). It is used to treat recovering alcoholics and heroin addicts (it blocks their high). The theory is that we get some type of "high" and enjoyment from our picking (hence the trancelike state some describe and addictive qualities of it) through our opioid receptors. If this enjoyment is nonexistent with the medication, picking should cease. Here is just one link with this mentioned, but more are out there: www.currentpsychiatry.com/2003_12/1203_skinpicking.aspIf anyone has taken this med let us know. I am probably going to try it.

you guys crack me up. or i crack you up. i am not a doctor (or even a nurse. i was a teacher for a long time though.) but i HAVE been dealing with skin issues for a good twenty-five years so . . . whatever that's worth. i looked up DesitinĀ© and:
TEXT
zinc oxide is a sunscreen and it doesn't appear to have anything in it that's bad for your skin in the long run. i would say if it works for you, use it. it's not like putting preparation H on your face (for an instant eye job) (which, incidentally, is NOT good) so i'd say, knock yourself out. the only thing would be if you're allergic, so DO THE PATCH TEST (you know, put a small amount on the inside of your wrist or forearm before you put it all over your face).

Just a note to say that I tried naltrexone for a good long time with no improvement to my skin picking.
I currently take Paxil (40 mg) Risperdal (2.5 mg) Luvox (100 mg) Wellbutrin (200 mg SR) Ativan (2 mg)
Part of my problem was I got into such deep depression, and the deeper the depression, the worse the picking got. I recently tried to go down to 20 mg paxil and 1 1/2 mg Risperdal, and immediately went into a picking frenzy, and had to go back up. So I'm not sure if that information helps anyone or not, and do want to point out that I am not recommending these medications or anything, because I am not a doctor.
I did initiate asking my pdoc to start the Luvox because of test results I found online that indicated improvement in picking behavior with Luvox.
And I can certainly say that I am better now than before the Luvox. For what it's worth,
luv,
Spring

What about just like regular desitine? (For diaper rash) Hey, I am one of the people who recommends Desitin Creamy. My mom has sworn by Desitin for a long time. The creamy version is just lighter, less greasy, and has a nicer fragrance instead of the fishy smell of regular desitin which I can't stand.
