Tricia, glad that you finally told someone (us)! I think that in itself will probably help. I don't think it's any sicker than anything else posted on this board. I do feel sad for all of us, that we're constantly hurting ourselves. So many of us (myself included of course) seem to have the ingrained notion that hurting ourselves is somehow preferable to hurting others, when in fact it's just as bad or maybe worse.
I hope you visit us again. This board has been a help to me and I hope it is for you. My suggestion would be to find a medical professional of some sort (or wholistic health practitioner) to help you, and don't give up till you find someone that takes the problem seriously.
Best of luck, OT

This is the first time i have posted to a site, so forgive me is i do something wrong. I started picking my fingers and feet when I was 9. I haven't picked my feet in years but I still pick my fingers. The only extended perid of time I did not pick anything was when I did transcendental meditation for several years. Once I stopped meditating, though, I went back to picking my fingers. I don't pick them as much if i keep them moisterized with hand lotion. I also wear gloves (cotton) sometimes to bed, with lotion on my hands. the lotion hurts sometimes because I pick my fingers til they bleed sometimes, but if I do the glove and lotion thing for several nights, I don't seem to pick as much for awhile. Hope this helps somebody.

Thankgoodness I found someone who pick whilst driving. I have recently started doing this with the full knowlwdge that i could vvery easily loose control of the stearing. The only way I stop is to cover my fingers with plasters but I really have to take up knitting or perhaps running? ;DI have heard that this habit is caused by excess energy--perhaps a punch bag? ;D I think it would work for me .

Hi fellow finger pickers I recently found this site but being from the UK noone else ever seems to be online at the same time. However I am grateful to share my problem on here it is a relief. I have picked my poor fingers and toes forever. I have started recording on a dictaphone evry time i pick it has shown me how much i pick but reduced the lenght of my picking sessions so far. I do also go through loads of plasters and rip off my toe nails till there is none showing mainly my little toe. I would love to have nice fingers, but think if i just pick off this bit they will look better but they end up worse. I also pick when driving watching tv infact anywhere and everywhere. I use nail clippers emery boards and my teeth and nails to pick, but I hope i am making a start using the dictaphone. I just want to thank you all for posting and making me feel less alone ;D

Hi thumbelina and welcome! I know what you mean about the idea that "once this little bit is gone, I'll be able to stop" and then it just gets worse and worse. I was using knitting to avoid picking but lately doing anything with my hands is painful. Last night I noticed I had 7 bandaids (plasters) on my fingers! I really need to start a program of some kind. I also pick at my feet: I pick my heels a lot in the summer, not so much now. I think I'm going to check out the Zero Tolerance thread and whoever posted the 21 days without picking one (I want to know what they know!) Good luck, OT

Help! My daughter (age 4) is showing signs of picking her thumb! I do this and she keeps telling me "Mommy! Quit picking at your owie!" But if she's doing it too I'm going to be pretty panicky. She says she wasn't picking, that it's part of her scrapes from falling down, but... anyone have any ideas for children? Thanks, OT

P.S. - Just to share some stuff that's been good for healing: Zim's Crack Creme. I found it at Wal Mart. I put it on just the affected areas (it smells kinda bad) and put cotton gloves over all at bedtime. Hope this helps others. OT

I used to have a big problem with biting at my cuticles- especially in the winter when my hands were extra dry. 2 years ago I was on a first date with this guy I was really excited about- we're eating dinner and he goes "I think you have ketchup dripping off your finger" ok- not ketchup buddy- that would be blood because I'm a freak who bites at my ravaged fingers... (luckily I only thought that- didn't say it lol). My friends and I still laugh about that comment- one of them called them my 'chicken fingers' after that- she said it was a nicer name than 'my gross hands'.
Anyway, hopefully you will be amused by that little incident- it inspired me to look for something more effective than hand cream, because that didn't cut it for me. I bought the Tweezerman Cuticle Clippers and kept them with me at all times- any time I had a hangnail or shred on my fingers I clipped it- and that was it. I didn't have to bite, pull and pick at that irritating piece anymore. If you haven't tried it, it may help- that's all I know that worked for me- I made it through this entire past winter with hands I didn't have to hide! Also, for hand cream the best I found is Kiehl's Ultimate Strength Hand Salve- super thick and rich, but absorbs immediately- every time I put it on I am amazed by how it can do that! Hope this helps.

I'm so glad this may help you! It's especially encouraging that this is something you haven't tried before (and had fail)- I went to the tweezerman website to get the EXACT name of the tool I was saved by- I'm going to try to paste the link in, but in case it doesn't work it is the TWEEZERMAN Power Hangnail Clipper and has a white plastic handle- $6. They have some that have stainless stell handles, but cost lots more- not worth it because the clipper part is identical on both models! Good luck- hope this helps you as much as it has me!!! cosmeticmall.com/basket.aspx

About the Tweezerman clipper... Well, I ended up buying the one with the steel handles (cuz I ended up at the drugstore before I read your post on the price info) but I really like it. Also my store didn't have the plastic-handled one. It really works, so I figure it's worth the investment. Thank you again reformedpicker!

Hey guys, I read all the posts...and can relate, I have donit all...I had a friend who's feet where so bad so could not walk on them...I mess with my nails and cuticles the night before my wedding...I did'nt have any hand pics taken...I do the same thing now just clip whatever is bothering me and leave it alone...sometimes I go through times when I just peel my fingers as if they where bananas...my sister gave me cuticle oil recently from Avon...it looks like a lip gloss but is a lavender oil that smells so good and is not messy, not like the tiny wheeny little nail polish bottle of oil she gave me before. You know people judge us by the way we look and the hands are looked at by others more then you know...I once saw a girl's hands at a grocery store and they looked soooo bad...they scared me...it was shocking how tore-up they were and looked so painful...I look at peoples hands to learn more about them and if I see bad hands I know that they are in the same boat as me and wish them luck in my head...Poor Paula Abdul for the infection she got in her tumbnail from a mancurist she had used...she had to have surgery on it...she said she's bringing her own tools from now on... Peace, SOS

Thank you SOS. It's funny you should mention looking at people's hands, and it's so true. Right after I got braces I found myself noticing people's teeth all the time, when I never had before. Strange. But yes, I also find I can really tell things about a person by looking at their hands. That cuticle stuff from Avon sounds wonderful. I love the smell of lavender. I need to find me an Avon lady cuz I want some wrinkle cream and some perfume too. Yay!

This is my first post. It's nice to know there are others like me. Even typing this right now is extremely painful b/c of all the raw skin. I've been doing this since summer camp at age 14. I pick my cuticles and the skin around my nails (just my hands) until I draw blood, and then keep going. I've gone through an entire first aid box at work but I really don't want to pick them. It brings me some type of release or relief or something. My boyfriend tells me my hands are disgusting and I know he is trying to be tough with me to stop, but nothing works. One of my friends bought me hand salve but I just never use it. I do NOT want to go on medication but I can't tell if this is just some result of some internal issue. And I can relate about embarassing moments. I had to change the toner and someone thought I still had ink on me, but it was dried blood. Gross!! I've just graduated college so I know my anxiety is at an all time high, but any advice?
