Hi. I am in high school now, and I've been picking my fingers for as long as I can remember. I don't know what to do. I've tried everything--cream, bandaids, fake nails, you name it, but nothing works. It's so hurtful to have people ask you what's wrong with your fingers, or to get yelled out when caught doing it. I want to stop so badly, but every time I stop, I just do it again. I feel so helpless sometimes..what can I do?

try rubber bands on your wrists and when you start to pick snap it... the aversive response will be associated with picking which ( if you snap it each time) should reduce the amount of picking....

Hey, my name's also Laura, I don't pick my hands - I pick my face, neck, shoulders, chest, arms and back. I have been doing this for 7 years. I have also recently started scratching my scalp (sometimes 'til it bleeds in my hair). I know how it feels to have people ask you what's wrong, and you can't tell them because they wouldn't understand. I also knows what it feels like when my parents catch me picking and they yell at me. I yell back and get really aggressive if they don't let me finish. Then later I feel guilty and hurt and depressed because I make myself look horrible.
I will try the rubber band idea - maybe it will help.
