Hi everyone, I just wanted to say thanks for a wonderful site and share an experience of mine. My 2 biggest regions are face and fingers, fingers being the absolute worst. Occasionally I'll go on the Atkins diet to drop a couple of pounds, but at the same time eating no carbs REALLY zaps my energy level. Without any debate on if this diet is really good for you or not, I've found that it takes away my nervous energy and I find myself picking facial scabs & fingers without my knowledge less often. (The intentional picking of blemishes on my face, however, stays the same.) I'm one of those people who will be doing it without realizing, especially while I'm in some form of stagnant activity like riding in a car or talking on the telephone. So, just an idea that if you limit your sugar and/or caffiene intake, you just might lose some of that nervous picking energy. Hush

This is of course if you're not already on medication! I haven't had psychological help yet, even though it was so bad at times that I probably should have. I thought it was just a bad habit until I saw this board. Now that I can link all of my picking tendencies together, I see the psychological pattern. So thanks everyone!

oh, the sugar-anxiety connection is totally real! i was just thinking about this subject today, in fact. i'm allergic to a lot of foods and i'm hypoglycemic, so i'm supposed to minimize my sugar intake. last year, my doctor had me go on a 3 month elimination diet -- i couldn't eat any sugar at all and i was limited to only 2 servings of complex carbs a week! the diet sucked, but i noticed major improvements in my skin and overall well-being. by the end of the 3 months, my skin was so clear, i didn't need cover up. even a coworker noticed and commented on how good i looked.
i only know a couple reasons why sugar affects us badly. 1) it causes insulin to be released and insulin is a destructive substance in big doses 2) sugar impedes white blood cells from functioning properly (so those infected pimples stay infected longer!) (maybe these 2 things are related)
once i got off the elimination diet, i started eating lots of carbs again. now my skin is in bad shape, i'm picking a lot, i'm stressed out, and i feel yucky. i definitely am going back on a less strict version of the diet!
