Now that I am here and committed to stop the cuticle damage I have been thinking very seriously about things that would help me stop.
1. Chewing gum (never liked the stuff before) so there is something in my mouth already and makes me think more about putting my fingers in my mouth. Trouble is I need to have some continuously otherwise I make up for lost time
2. Cutting your nails really, really short so you can't pick with them. I am going to make that a last resort as my nails are not damaged and the only thing nice about my fingers
3. Having 'dirty' hands. I wouldn't dream of putting my fingers in my mouth if I had just touched an animal or been to the toilet or scratched my armpit for example. I know this is a bit gross in other ways but some of us are desperate.
Maybe some of these can help you

Hi all: this is my first time here. having my nails done at the manicurist really helps too. because they look so nice aftewards i dont want to pick them. however, the tough part is that i am often too embarrassed to go there after a bad pick-session, so i end up not going. my boyfriend made it a routine for me to go every weekend, so the fear of being embarrassed was so great that i stopped picking my hands, but then all it took was one stress event, then i am back to the drawing board... :-(

Hi. I just wanted to say that putting tape over your fingers might help you. I am a finger and lip picker and I have battled this for 5 years now.

I am a finger and lip picker. I don't put fingers in my mouth. I mostly pick my cuticles and lips with my fingers. If I am sitting still, I am picking. Any suggestions besides cutting nails short?
